We practice Management Intensive Grazing (MiG), an ecologically enhancing method that supports the vibrant health of our animals and the pastures they graze. We design and implement a planned ecosystem which utilizes energy from the sun to grow healthy livestock while improving the land through carbon sequestration and balanced nutrient cycling. Put simply, we grow healthy soil, plants, animals and people on local pastures. Our animals live outside in woodland meadows where they have a natural lifestyle and diet.
Our beeves are born in the spring on a neighboring farm where they spend their first months following their mothers through clean woodland pastures. We purchase them as calves or one-year-olds and move them to our farm where they are rotated on diverse woodland pastures, grazing in small groups and putting on ?frame? (muscle and bone). When they near their second birthday they are ready to fatten, and we time this perfectly with the late spring flush of high-quality forages. The beeves are harvested on or about the summer solstice of their second year, just as the pasture reaches peak nutritional quality. This ensures that the animals themselves end life at a high rate of gain on the healthiest feed imaginable, which translates into well finished beef with an amazing flavor profile and just the right amount of vitamin-rich fat.
Our posse of pigs have it made in the shade on our land in Jackson, Maine. They move to a fresh woodland meadow paddock every three days, and have unlimited access to all the whey they can drink. We get the whey for our pigs from a local cheesemaker who sources the milk she uses from a local grassfed dairy herd. All in all, their diet consists of a small ration of grain, lots of whey, scraps from the kitchen, and abundant roots, greens, and bugs from the meadow. Their days consist of much rooting, grazing, playing, socializing, and many long naps in the shade.
