I, too, was disappointed in this "farmer's market." It is a fair where you go to buy unhealthy, fatty fried foods, meats, desserts, etc. There is relatively little, if any, produce and most of that is purchased, not grown by the "farmer." I'll take my time and money elsewhere--downtown.

And I'm disappointed in the "beer garden." Markets shouldn't e in the bar business. Drunkeness isn't a virtue. If they were beer tastings like wine tastings, it would be a little different but to sell beer for the purpose of inebriation is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I have been reading in newspapers, monthly magazines and hearing on news broadcasts... "go to your local farmers markets to get organic home grown food". So, we did. We went to West Des Moines' Farmers Market this afternoon. We got there at 4:30pm. It started at 4pm. There were 3-4 vendors selling fruits and veggies. The vendor I shopped at says they buy their food (not grow it themselves) and they spray chemicals on it. Another vender had a huge table with 8 veggies on it. I was very dissappointed. I wanted to buy produce from farmers who grow it themselves ORGANICALLY. I will not return to the Valley Junction Farmers Market any more this season.

You should try the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market. There is absolutely everything there, a lot of it organic. A lot of times you can buy direct from local farms if you call them or email them to set up a time. People come to our farm to pick up chickens, ducks, and eggs year round, veggies in the spring, summer and fall. Also try the Iowa Food Coop during the fall and winter. You place your order online and go pick up at Merle Hay Mall. Tai Johnson-Spratt, Foxhollow Poultry & Organic Veg Farm, Elkhart, IA

Hi Leigha, Try joining a CSA program next year... as most are filled for this year. There are many around the Des Moines area. We offer our members a shopping list of available fruits and veggies for the upcoming weeks and they do their own shopping. We then deliver to 2 different spots in town or members are always welcome to come to the farm to pick up. Don't give up on Farmers Markets as there are some really good markets out there.
