I spent the first 19 years of my life 2 streets away from the Broadway Market. My parents had no vehicle so All of our produce/meat/bread was purchased daily from the various vendors.
What stands today is a mere shadow of what was many years ago. There were actual farmers in the rear parking area. Ducks, chickens and fresh produce prevailed.
There is very limited access to fresh now. The majority, if not all, produce purveyors purchase their goods from the Niagara Food Terminal. They don't grow. It's not their stuff however they lay claim and take credit. Also charge high prices.
The Specialty Shops adhere to an ethnicity that was not evident in the original growth of the Market. All in all, it's a nice place. But it's not as it used to be. Keep that in mind.

The Broadway Market has been a Buffalo tradition since before I was born. Today more than anything a positive and wholesome tradition should be maintained for the next generation to appreciate. In this age of plastic substitutions and microwavable ill-health, the fresh food market is the healthiest and the most economical way to feed a substantially large family. DO IT YOURSLF, IS BEST.

The broadway market has been a staple in my life for years. I remember when my mom and dad use to shop there. My grandfather was a huxter (someone who sold fruit and veggies) they use to have ton of farmers coming out to sell. Then we would go see my dad who worked at Satlers across the street. I always, always go every year with my family at easter. Such a wonderful place. Loads of great memories of family that is no longer here.

As our country's people are becomimg more and more the same in this 'melting pot' we still need to retain our family history and values. I grew up south of Buffalo, so my trips into the city were few, but most did include a trip to the Broadway Market. Mom and Dad would get foods and items that my dad would use to make his polish sausage. I can still remember the smells, the people, the noise and what, to a little girl, seemed to be another world. And it was...it was a grouping of mostly Eastern European who had immigrated to the US and now were making a living 'selling their wares'. Over the years children have taken over the sppots from their parents, others have moved in while others moved on. The market is a living thing as are most markets like this. They need to be kept alive.

Because its one of the only places in buffalo that I remember as a kid and it keeps on going. Though the neighborhood has changed immensely it hasent made the strong polish turn and run away. I'm back to buffalo a few times a year and I almost always stop and pick things up for my trip back.My mother was born on Gibson street in 1915 and I remember the stories she told me of the old neighbohood and its a shame that it couldn't stay close to the way it has in Kaiser town.Kaiser town seems to have stayed to the original heritage. I am sure that all people living near the Broadway market need it to stay. There are so few places to shop in the area, especially for our speciality items. Please keep these people in business. Its comforting to be able to see the same vendors yeAR AFTER YEAR.

I have amazing memories of my Polish grandmother taking all of us to the market every Saturday. The smells, the sights, the history would wrap me in a warm blanket of tradition and love. As an adult, we now take our children to the market, and condinue the traditions of past generations. The market is in an economically depressed section of Buffalo, and struggles to remain open. $5,000 would serve as a much needed shot in the arm to help keep this slice of history available for future generations to share.

The Broadway Market is a historical and cultural center. When shopping there, not only is one shopping but also paying homage to the efforts of keep up its tradition. It is a center of Polish culture, and the heart of Polonia (Broadway-Fillmore district). Also, it is appropriate to support efforts of a farmer's market, since the farm on Wilson Street is a few blocks away. Both, along with the Central Terminal, the beautiful churches, and other landmarks big and small will serve in a long-overdue East Side renaissance. Dyngus Day is a start. The Farmer's Market will take the plan further into fruition.

The history of the Broadway Market makes it a treasure of Buffalo and WNY. The market is one of the oldest open markets of its kind in the country and continues to be an important symbol of a brighter time in this community's history. While fairly small, $5,000 can be put to much use at and for the Broadway Market. The market is the centerpiece of a neighborhood and if that neighborhood is to ever revitalize, the market will be a big reason why. One should consider this award as a down-payment on a better future for Buffalo and particularly the E. Side.
