I lived in Ypsilanti for 30 years and saw them struggle. Many times we were low on money and still able to purchase quality produce. Vendors are friendly and pull together and have a childrens' garden for low income folks. It is truly a community organization and I vote for them getting the $5,000 prize for the refurbishment of the train depot where musicians played, the elderly had a place to hang out and dance, the handicapped were welcommed, and toddlers waved at the trains and were encouraged to participate! Oh the food was wonderful and very inexpensive!

I support Farmers' Markets everywhere! I lived in Ypsilanti a few years back, and saw the need for this market when it was just starting. Currently, I live in Southern Mexico, where I have started a grass roots org. educating the importance of growing, selling and consuming locally produced organic foods. Was a member of the East End Food Co-op when I lived in Pittsburgh for many years and am very happy to see that it still survives--stronger than ever--despite the fact that "Whole Foods" moved in practically next door. It's all about growing the local community.

This market on Tuesday from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm is an ideal market for the local neighborhood. It is within walking distance from a lot of lower income residents, many of whom can't afford gas to drive to a supermarket. Note that there are no supermarkets in the City of Ypsilanti.

I love the market for it's accessibility. The fresh foods, friendly vendors, community atmosphere and prices. Most of all I love the fact that the food is coming from farms in my area- not shipped 1000 miles - and that those vendors are shopping at local businesses and paying taxes in the same region that I am in. .

The Ypsilanti Farmers Market is a healthier alternative for residents who otherwise would have to purchase produce from local gas stations, etc. which sometimes is not in the best condition, It's also in a convenient location for easy access. Its food demonstrations teach how to enhance the nutrients of food which some people have no clue of how to do. It' a good education tool.
