What has amazed me is how much Fox and Janet are in this for the community and the big picture. For them its not just about making a living and if truth be told they aren't even at the point of making a living from the farm alone yet. For them it's about the sustainable farming practice, the building a community around them through food and bringing things from a simpler time back. Things like knowing people in your community and building a network of support. With the bedroom communities that we live in these days it can be challenging.... I digress.
Fox and Janet work very hard and distribute delicious organic food a long with just out right being good people. The farm functions year round as does the delicious food. Our family hopes that this is a farm that continues to grow for decades to come and that our children can grow up with the benefit of know these great people, learning from the lessons of a farm and enjoying the nutritious and yup I'm going to say it again delicious food!
Thanks Fox and Janet!
We are very happy with the high quality, organic produce that we get, and also with the large variety of vegetables and fruits. It's a great combination between traditional produce, such as spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, various summer and winter squashes, potatoes, and less well-known varieties, such as Asian salad greens, Kohlrabi, or Cardoon. Recipe sharing is highly encouraged!
Fox and Janet continue to amaze me with all the effort and dedication they put into their family farm. They are great people, and they continue to do a wonderful job not only growing produce, but also growing a community around their farm.
They provide eggs as well as vegetables and some herbs included in the farm share. Last season we got several weeks worth of melons as well - my children welcomed these sweet treats immensely. Special treats we've gotten are honey and maple syrup in the spring.
My kids love to go play with the baby goats (especially when the babies are in the house) and see the pigs and chickens.
They have many community building events and "classes" for members scheduled at the farm. Ice skating (weather permitting!), taffy pull, candy making, sauerkraut making, cookie/holiday party, potlucks and game nights, bonfire nights, in the past they've even had a "barn dance" (in their hoop house).
I love that the farm produces all year round. It's a growing, evolving farm. Always something new, and lots of big plans for the future - orchard, cold storage "caves", cheese cave, etc. 2 new irrigation wells are in and ready to go for the season. I'm very excited to join Portage River Farm for another season.
The produce I have received, as well as the eggs, honey and maple syrup have been very high quality and tasty. The Adelmans also organize member social events like a maple sugaring party, taffy pulling party, ice skating party etc. Farm meetings allow for input from members regarding priorities for the farm.
Finally, John and Janet are just friendly, genuine people with a work ethic that others could emulate. I am confident that Portage River Farm will continue to grow and prosper under their direction.
