Fresh produce doesn't mean that it is GMO free. Monsanto is so prevalent on the Islands that it is destroying our food source. I'd love to support locally grown food if I am guaranteed that it is organic, labeled and not tainted by Monsanto seeds and pesticides. I'm not even sure that the farmers here know what GMO means. Our locally grown papayas are completely GMO because they farmers here never bothered to do the research while the seeds were being genetically modified before their own eyes. I'd like to know where to buy fresh GMO free food in Honolulu. Is it possible?

Local Hawaii farmers can not compete price-wise with mainland grown produce despite the shipping costs to get mainland produce into Hawaii's stores.

Land cost (leases), water cost, labor plus fuel costs to run the farm are all much much greater here in Hawaii as opposed to corporate thousand acre mainland farms.

Money spend on Hawaii grown produce mostly stays here in Hawaii as opposed to mainland corporations' coffers.

Hawaii produce is fresher too. There are a whole bunch of organic certified farms here in Hawaii.

Support LOCAL Hawaii Farmers!

I was hoping since the produce was local that it would be less expensive compared to supermarket prices, but they weren't and alot of the produce are not organic. I really do want to support our local farmers, but I need their support too. They need to start producing more organic produce and get rid of the use of pesticides and reduce prices for the locals. It already cost an arm and a leg to live here on this beautiful island. I expect local produce to be alot cheaper since it does not need to incur any overseas shipping costs. Mahalo.

Zachary, I understand it is difficult for small farmers to compete with the corporations. I do support local farmers as long as they are gmo and pesticide free. I also know that organic farmers use pesticides on their produce, but from my understanding it is not synthetic and non toxic. I would love to see more organic farms on this island.
