This can be done by growing your own; or, if that is not an option, acquaint yourself with a local farmer who is growing nutritious food in a sustainable way that improves the soil and the environment.
I became a volunteer on Down to Earth Farm for all of those reasons and more. Brian and Kristin Lapinski are doing what I would, if I could. Raising a family, while closely grounded to agriculture and the community that they have chosen as their home.
Visits to Down to Earth Farm are welcomed. Usually on Thursdays and by appointment. Many school groups have visited the farm. A weekly newsletter is sent out later each week just before the Saturday markets at Riverside Arts Market and the Beaches Market at Jarbo Park.
Plans are to add an educational pavilion to the farm to accommodate another goal - to provide instruction to those who want to learn how to grow, harvest, preserve, and prepare healthy, nutritious food.
Although there are not many CSA memberships remaining, there are multiple ways to become a member. A paid membership; a combination, paid/working membership; or a working membership. And, of course, you can just volunteer (for those of us with a need to get our hands into the soil).
I cannot find enough ways to praise Brian and Kristin for their harvest, for their gentleness, or for their friendship; however, I admit to being a little biased.
