I am happy that we do have a co-op in this food-desolate area (well, desolate through the winter and early spring). Their prepared foods at the deli counter are quite good and I enjoy being able to have a hot cup of strong coffee while I shop. The employees are friendly and helpful and their craft beer and wine selection is a bonus. They do a good job of bringing in local/regional organic produce that is generally quite fresh as well as some produce from out of state. The down-side of the co-op is that most packaged foods and frozen foods are wildly high priced, even for the area. Just yesterday, I was looking for a supplement for my child that I saw priced $18 elsewhere and was shocked to see the co-op's price for the same exact item (same size) was $32! I cannot stomach paying $11/lb for frozen ground bison or beef when I can stock up at the Marquette co-op when I'm over there for far less. Like another reviewer had noted, beware of expiration dates, as well. It is a nice resource for the area, but could clearly improve a bit.

The produce here is some of the best in the area. They do support local producers, and I appreciate that. They also have some pastured dairy products that are hard to find. Various processed natural/organic products are available, though priced quite high even with the membership discount. Beware of expiration dates, though. I have bought rancid nuts from their refrigerator, found bread two weeks past expiration, and ice cream four months past due. They don't have any problem pulling beef from the freezer that is six months past expiration. The purchaser says that keeping expired bread on the shelf is a regular policy. So, shop here for convenience, for local produce, for your natural foods and vitamins, but be careful.

The coop seems to be tightening up the ship! Hopefully, inventory management will be improving. Good place to go for locavores.

I am both a grower for this co-op and a customer. They have good products and are always willing to help you order things that are not on the shelf. They are also very supportive of their growers. I am glad that the Keweenaw Co-op is my local co-op!
