Recently my father was terminated from the farmers market for no good reason. The market master speculated that my father's tomatos were not grown on his farm, they were invited to come out to the farm and see the tomato operation for themselves. They toured the farm and agreed we had an ample tomato crop, but were still suspicious. They left that day tellin us that they would contact us later in the we to let us know how they wanted to proceed. My father provided them with the information they asked for later that week and had a message later that he was terminated from the market.
Many questions are still unanswered about the situation and it seems that the farmer's market staff is unwilling to provide evidence to my father and I about the situation. It is obvious that this market is run on one person's ideals and no one can question these. All I have asked, is for them to meet my father and I in person and show us what evidence they have. I have had no response to a letter sent last week and do not expect any. It seems that over controlling market master does not have time to back her unmerited decision up and would rather look the other way out of her coward ways.
I feel that the decision to terminate my father from this market was persuaded by other vendors in the market and these political acts have turn people bad within the market. It is very sad to see someone discrimnated against trying to make an honest living, my father has worked hard to build his operation and now has busted dreams.
I would urge anyone attending the market to question the market master about this situation, I bet you get a blank stare and a quick look to the ground. They know that their decision is based on invisible evidence and do not plan to back it up.
Happy Farming

Bloomington, IN has an amazing farmers' market. Plenty of organic food, free range organic chicken, local produce, local wine, local cheese, and heirloom tomatoes. The atmosphere is also a draw. Local performers and often music for children. It represents food politics that are important to me: local organic farming with a friendly and socially conscious atmosphere.

Our Bloomington Community Farmer's Market is nestled between the new Bloomington B-line Bicycle/Walking Trail and the historic Showers Commons. It's the perfect "old meets new" setting for a market that is a tradition and novel in and of itself. I first recognized a lot of the vendors as guest speakers from the People's University of Bloomington Grow Organic Educator Series class that I've taken; it's great to see people practice what they teach. I've been to two of our regular vendor's farms. You can see The Chili Woman each week - you can taste-test heirloom varieties of sorrel, arugula, swiss chard, and lettuce; you can buy a head of fresh garlic and have another variety thrown in for free 'just because.' The variety of live music, and the annual Salsa Contest and Tomato Tasting are just the icing on the cake. Or rather the icing on the cake, quiche, tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, onions, and flowers...

It's cheaper to buy organic produce directly from the farmers at the market over buying conventional produce from the supermarket. The world's best sweet corn is available, right next to two girls clogging, who are next to the person selling elk meat. A LARGE percentage of the town's population visits, and we always run into neighbors and friends while there.

Our market has grown over the last two decades to become a fusion of town and gown in our university community. Its a great place to meet old friends and make new ones while shopping for fresh, lovingly local foods. The market vendors are not middle men -- they grown their own, and offer an increasingly rich choice of sustainable, organic and heirloom varieties, and the quality is superb. The market is supported by the city, by our local food coop, by an increasing number of restaurant chefs, and by young and old in a community thinking about our collective futures in hopeful, creative and sustainable ways.

Bloomington Community Farmers' Market was way ahead of the curve offering pesticide-free produce years before "eat organic" became a fashionable buzz word. There's a dizzying display of fruit & veges, like lettuce grown from a variety of European seed that thrives thru the heat of summer. The farmer is a Vietnamese woman. Our beautiful beans were grown by a retired advertising executive. My eggplant came from a singing man from Trinidad. I believe my family is healthier because we eat local. Our Market is a tapestry woven from a colorful culture of sweat, sun, soil, & smiles.
