When visiting this farmer's market, I felt and immediate feeling of closeness and community. The farmers who bring their products were very friendly and helpful. I saw that many of them actually new their customers by name. I enjoyed watching this interaction and am actually writing a paper based on this sense of family and community I felt in the market. Oh, and the food sold there is absolutely, positively, magnificent. I would recommend this market to anyone who enjoys good food, and even better people.

My family has loved the Old Capitol Farmer's Market because not only can we find fresh local produce, but we can get to know the growers, learn where and (most importantly) HOW the food was grown and handled. We love knowing that we're supporting the local economy and families we see in our area.

There is a great variety; vegetables, fruit, pasture-raised meats, eggs and cheese, herbal balms and oils with many of the growers using sustainable methods. You can find fresh breads, home-made pies and cookies. There are sweet treats and drinks for the kids as well as coffee and teas for adults. What I love best of all is the energy when I walk down the street. People who have come together to celebrate farming, local foods and the abundance that has been given to us to grow and nourish ourselves. I love the community that is created between growers and consumers and appreciate that the farmers have gone to the trouble to make health convenient for us by coming together in one place twice a week!

The tomatoes are Heaven-sent! The cherries, blueberries, and peaces are amazing. The chicken and pork that I buy are all raised free-range and that helps my guilt for the meat cravings that my husband and I have. I am buying products from my neighbors and they do not have to drive very far... Thus, I reduce my carbon footprint and get the very best of every fresh vegetable, fruit and much more that I could imagine.

It is in the Downtown, near the Illinois Old State Capitol State Historic Site, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Law Office and the Lincoln family's mid-nineteenth century historic neighborhood and home. In addition to providing locally grown vegetables and heirloom products, its location near the brick streets where Lincoln, as young lawyer walked with his young sons, Willy and Tad on his shoulders, is a link to the historic heritage of our community.

There's a great variety of produce among the MANY vendors. Local crafts and art and music are featured, too. And there are local bakers, too.
I can buy soap from a maker who uses ingredients from her family's farm and heirloom tomatoes grown in good central Illinois soil. The flowers and herbs make the market a visual treat. I always see people I know, so it's a social event, too.

It's not a lot of the booths with the same produce, but all kinds of different items and the quality is wonderfully fresh. Our farmers market is filled with wonderful farmers who grow great organic food and offer it at practical prices. The farmers are wonderful, giving advice on everything from how to grow your own at home to how to prepare it. I love the low-key atmosphere, and always run into a lot of people I know for great conversations. I can't list my favorite farmers, because there are so many!
If the market would provide access to people who use the Link card (food stamps), I would do a lot more, if not all of my shopping there, as would many people who do not currently have access to fresh local organic food. It's a win situation for farmers and a win situation for residents.

I would highly recommend inquiring about the produce you purchase from each vendor. I believe the only organically grown produce comes from Veenstra's and a fellow who pays for the "organic" label. Veenstra's offers quite a variety, and the guys who sell at market are pretty pleasant to deal with. There is a nice herb-growing woman who runs Greenthoughts Garden and sells good-quality herbs and soaps, as well as other specialists in honey, baked goods, and hot peppers. Throughout the season you can find strawberries, apples, peaches and lots of seconds! My hope for the Capitol Farmer's mkt is more naturally grown produce, more vendors, and more craft days!
