Everytime I work at the farm and realize my efforts barely put a dent into all the work that needs to be done. It makes me appreciate our small farmers and I am grateful that Pat undertakes this huge task so that I may have local organic food on my plate!
We have learned to love peas and beets and all kinds of squash and greens. We have come to more appreciate farm-fresh, organic sweet corn, carrots and potatoes. We have been introduced to many new vegetables that we would not have ever tried if they had not been in our shares. A cookbook, and recipes each week were included.
Since we always purchased working shares, each of my four children (now aged 6 to 21) have had the opportunity to work with me. Pat has always been accommodating, and given age appropriate jobs to each, and most of the time they delighted in doing them. She also does her utmost to make you comfortable while working. She makes herself available to answer any organic gardening or preserving questions. And, she is always a great reference if there is something specific you are looking for and cannot find...organic freezer beef for instance.
Lastly, I can honestly say that working on the farm, out in the middle of the field, is one of the most peaceful experiences a mother can have!
I highly recommend this CSA farm!
Helping out on the farm was an added bonus. It was my getaway from a busy schedule. I loved eating what was being harvested that week which had us trying many new veggies.
The owners Pat and Clark were always nice and welcoming. I loved talking with Pat and asking her questions about various things. It takes a dedicated, hard-working person to run a farm and it definitely shows at Whetham Farms.
I am also thrilled that the farm is relatively close to where we live which makes pick-ups easier.
Again, the produce rivals anything I've ever found in the store and I like supporting a local farmer and getting produce from down the street versus from across the country. Less gas, less pollution, better prices, you can't beat it.
Michelle, I can't understand why you'd complain about Pat in public. I suggest you stop this public display and discuss any problems with Pat in private. We've been CSA members with Pat for 3 years and will return again next year. We're always been extremely happy with all the produce we've received. Pat is helpful and taught us a lot about organic food..
Michele, so sorry to hear your experience wasn't what you had hoped. This was our first year at a CSA and we found this to be an incredible experience! Pat, owner, was always welcoming, patiently and graciously answering my questions! We were also given the opportunity to do our work requirement on various days of the week. The produce was excellent! We were introduced to many vegetables that we'd never knew existed and Pat sent receipes in the weekly update to help us newer members! We will be disappointed when November arrives - it has been fun discovering what the goodies would be each week! Looking forward to participating next year!
Michelle It is unfortunate you had a bad experience with this CSA. I have been a member since the first year and am still amazed how much better things taste and the increased "shelf life" of the produce. I also have never seen this owner be rude - instead, she seems always eager to share her knowledge with anyone interested. CSAs are not for everyone, particularly organic because the veggies are not poisoned and polished to look pretty.
Michelle, while I can't speak to your actual experience, mine has been quite different. CSAs are not always for everyone, especially if there is work involved. The produce I got from Whetham Farm (and this is my first year) was outstanding! My husband and I are vegans and we love produce. There is no way I could afford this type of produce at organic grocery store prices. While I"m sorry you had a less than favorable experience, I think it is quite unfair to say the produce is substandard when it is clearly a cut above conventional AND organic produce at the store.

We have been well cared for at this farm. From being exposed to a wide variety of vegetables(most we would never purchase in at a grocer), to having the opportunity to harvest potatoes and other vegetables, to getting to know Pat and Clark and the duties entailed in farming, it has and continues to be a valuable experience for us as well as our palates.
