Who is Hexenring? Hexenring Mushrooms is a new farm operating on 20 acres in beautiful Capon Springs, West Virginia. Steve and Anne Kirk began this project in 2016 after relocating to the area from Baltimore, MD. We spent many years dreaming of a project we could start that would take us back to the land, but keep us from being 'traditional' farmers. Mushrooms called to us as foragers out in the wild looking year after year for wild edibles like morels and chicken of the woods. More and more it seemed that mushrooms were an essential part of a healthy diet that was only beginning to be investigated in western culture, though their positive nutritional and medicinals impacts have long been embraced elsewhere in the world. We saw this recent surge of interest as a calling that we could offer our new community a wealth of knowledge on mushroom cultivation and high quality fresh mushrooms. Growing Practices: We grow everything at Hexenring with the intention of supporting wild ecosystems. We love being animals living in the mountains and we love mushrooms. We use outdoor cultivation as much as possible so that our mycelial networks can interact with the ants, spiders, snails, gnats, flies, lichen, deer, frogs, raccoons, bears, and even the mold. When we need to grow indoors we use as many local or on-farm substrates as possible. While not much is certified organic (though we typically purchase outside spawn from organic producers), our food is healthy, vibrant, and sustainable in a way the USDA could never verify. After years of being in the organic industry, working with dozens and dozens of certified organic farms, we came to the conclusion that intention and vision define how well something is grown. The certification can be the crutch. We welcome any questions; our process is an open book.
