The Sisters of Providence, staff of White Violet Center for Eco-Justice and the alpacas of White Violet Farm Alpacas invite you to join them on the beautiful grounds of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., on Saturday, March 15, 2008, for a one-day seminar on many of the key aspects of alpaca ownership. (See the schedule at the bottom of this page.)
Noted veterinarian and alpaca owner Dr. Randall Larson, D.V.M., will lead us through the history, physiology and health issues of these extraordinary animals. Dr. Larson is a graduate of the Universityof Illinois School of Veterinary Science. He has bred and owned a high-quality herd of alpacas for many years. He frequently lectures at alpaca conferences and annually holds a seminar at his farm on Neo-Natal Health Issues.
The staff of White Violet Center will explore the use of fiber, hoping to answer the question, "What do I do with this?" See firsthand how a small farm assesses, cards, spins, weaves, felts and knits its fiber for sale.
Best of all, meet the animals close up and personal as we demonstrate basic animal care, assess conformation and fiber on the animals, discuss breeding decisions and reproductive health issues including how ultrasounds are performed.
For those who are prospective owners, this is an opportunity to meet and talk with experienced breeders and see firsthand how an alpaca farm functions. For those with more experience, it is an opportunity to ask those questions that may make your herd safer, your pastures more effective and your fiber use more productive.
