We grow over 80 varieties of vegetables and over 80 varieties of flowers on 1 acre. Among our communitys favorite crops are Callaloo (A cultivated Amaranth-family leafy green, like a hearty Spinach), Chile peppers, Eggplant, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Bitter Melon, Kale, and Collard Greens, among many others! Our flowers run the gamut from your tried and trues (Sunflowers, Zinnias, Cosmos) to other rarer beauties such as Strawflower, Scabiosa, Euphorbia and Gomphrena. The income that we generate through our restaurant sales, Farmers Market, and CSA program directly supports our educational programing and keeps our farm going strong! We offer Vegetable and Flower CSA shares and hold our weekly Farmers Market every Wednesday on the farm from 2:30p-6:30p.
The Youth Farm prioritizes sustainable soil cultivation and growing practices, inspired by natural farming techniques used by ancient civilizations for thousands of years prior to the introduction of mechanized and chemical-based farming. We are intensive growers, planting anf growing over 20,000 transplants and at least double the number of direct seeded crops. Healthy soil fertility management is of the utmost importance, and seen as the key to crop production and a balanced, diverse ecosystem. We manage and improve our soil through annual soil testing, crop rotation and companion planting, permanent raised beds and permanent paths, heavy applications of compost made on site, and minimized tillage. French, or Bio-Intensive tillage is done by hand, and minimizes disruption of microbial growth and processes. The farm seeks to work holistically, integrating the demands and needs of the soil, the crops the farmers, and the surrounding community to maintain and sustain health, vibrance and economic sustainability.
In addition to year-round youth programming, we offer a number of ways to get involved on the farm, including Field Trips for youth, internships, community volunteer days, and free community workshops. Please check out our website for more info on our programming, ways to get involved, and upcoming events!
