My name is Jake Downen. My grandfather and I run a small family farm with locations in Hecker and Freeburg Illinois. Our partnership has become known as "Two Jakes Farms".
We raise only grass fed beef. Our herd is primarily Black Angus but we are not breed specific. We raise five or six head at a time and sell two or three each year so our operation is very small but we hope to grow larger in the coming years. We raise our herd on locally grown grass and clover hay. While we are not certified organic, we do not administer hormones, antibiotics or medicines to our cattle.
I am interested in finding out more about the market for grass fed beef. I graduated from college in 2010 with a degree in Entrepreneurship and while I am currently employed, I am looking to get more deeply involved in the cattle business and am seeking restaurants in the St. Louis area looking to buy strictly grass fed beef on a regular basis. I am also looking for people with some knowledge on getting certified organic and the cost/benefit of doing so.
