Owner Jane Desotelle started collecting wild herbs for teas in the mid-1970's from the clean remote area of the Adirondack region of New York State. After giving them away for a few years Underwood Herbs was formed. From her solar powered 1860's one room schoolhouse on an unpaved little used road, Jane propagates and ethically collects wild plants for naturally caffeine free herb teas, wild catnip toys, fresh balsam wreaths, balsam pillows from recycled Christmas trees, plus more.
In 2007, Traditional Artists of Upstate New York named Jane Desotelle as a heritage award winner. Herbalism is an ancient art to be sure, but the award is also given for community work. Jane helped start the Adirondack Farmers' Market Cooperative, Inc. and manages the Plattsburgh Botanical Sanctuary. The sanctuary rescues plants from construction sites and gives tours educating people on how to identify, ethically collect and how to use wild plants from the wild exotic to the unappreciated dandelion. Over 300 species can be viewed at this small sanctuary.
Jane also sells fresh wild foods and jellies at area farmers' markets in Plattsburgh, Keene and Keeseville.
Jane offers lectures, workshops, and plant id walks. Tours on your property or at the Plattsburgh Botanical can be arranged. See facebook for photos and updated info.
