American Milking Devon cattle were the first cattle breed to arrive in colonial America in 1623. With nearly 400 years of adaptation to the vegetation and climate of New England, this heritage breed offers a taste of the past, with no antibiotics, no artificial hormones, and our closed herd means that every animal is bred, born, and raised on our farm. UpTunket Farm is proud to focus on the conservation of genetics, taste, landscape, and local history. By rotationally grazing our American Milking Devon cattle and using innovative methods to graze into early winter, we work hard to produce and sell beef and breeding stock that fit Vermont's reputation for quality, and you can even find our cattle on the Vermont state flag! 100% Grassfed: Our cattle consume only grass and hay, creating a fine quality, healthy beef. Although we have a variety of cuts, we focus primarily on Burger and Brats, and we try to make sure regular folks like us can afford to buy the kind of beef Vermonters have appreciated for centuries. Our farm began as a homestead, and our cattle have long been at the center of our daily lives. We milk a few for our home consumption, and we appreciate the heartiness and intelligence of this unique breed. You can learn more about our lifestyle and philosophy in Philip Ackerman-Leists recent books: Up Tunket Road: The Education of a Modern Homesteader and Rebuilding the Foodshed: Creating Local, Sustainable, and Secure Food Systems.
