In 2001 I met Monica Spiller and began growing the heirloom wheat named Sonora that she revived. I have grown it every year since on my CCOF certified organic farm In the Capay Valley in N CA. I offer whole berries in 25 lb bags and also superfine and medium grinds on my Austrian Stone mill- milled fresh to order.
It was the breeding and growing of organic cotton (Colorganic Foxfibre) that brought me to farming, as in the early '80's there were no organic cotton farmers, so I had to do become one. In 2000 I took over a flock of organic colored merino sheep to prevent them going to slaughter. I had been on the path towards farming biodynamically and so they fit in with my goal of on farm holistic soil fertility that would allow me to avoid possibly gmo contaminated inputs. I am still learning and growing and still certified organic (CCOF) and not yet certified Demeter.
I strive for humane handling of the sheep. I was finally able to purchase a great system to be able to sort and doctor them in a reduced stress manner. I do not dock tails or castrate, but this leaves me with too many rams and so I have found a humane slaughter facility at Superior Farms where I can bring 6 ram lambs in at a time for harvest of meat. The slaughter is not certified organic, so I cannot sell the meat as certified. But it is USDA cut and wrap and can be sold commercially.
Since these are not a meat breed and I do not cross breed my ewes to a larger meat breed, the amount of meat per animal is between 22-30 lbs.
