Prairie Pines is a 145-acre tract of land that was gifted to the University of Nebraska Foundation by Walt and Virginia Bagley. The site is now managed by the School of Natural Resources. The University has a short description of the site here. Before gifting the site, Walt and Virginia placed a conservation easement on the land, which stipulated that the land must not be developed, but should be a place for agricultural and environmental education in perpetuity. The land contains native prairie, hay fields, several different wooded habitats, and will soon have a wetland. Community CROPS will transform one of the hayfields in the west central portion of Prairie Pines into an incubator farm beginning in 2013. We plan to expand to two other hayfields in the next five years, ultimately tripling the size of our training farm.
