We have our roots down in the city but we grow where we've been planted! We sustainably farm in a big way, in a small space. You can find us turning pages of seed catalogs in winter, starting seeds in spring, getting our hands dirty and harvesting in summer and fall. Among the landscaping, you'll find herbs, berry bushes, fruit trees, rhubarb and asparagus. Tomatoes, peppers, and beans get their places in the sun nestled in the flower beds next to coneflower and clematis. I've dried, frozen, and canned our harvests for many years, enjoying fresh garden salsa in December, pickled jalapeos in January, and spaghetti sauce in February, all grown by us.
In Spring 2016, we introduced chicken keeping into our homesteading and began to see the first eggs last fall! Our eggs are farm fresh, hand gathered. We feed our hens a natural feed with no chemicals and no animal by-products. Within their feed, they receive prebiotics & probiotics for overall health and marigold enzymes to enhance deep orange yolk coloration. No antibiotics, no hormones. Our hens are living the good life without threat from predators and treats daily, including black oil sunflower seeds, romaine lettuce, melons, squash, edible flowers, mealworms (absolute favorite!), and a variety of vegetable scraps from the kitchen. As an avid gardener, there are plenty of weeds and garden excess to treat the hens and the children in the neighborhood are especially generous in finding insects and worms to treat our girls as well. Egg colors include, blue, olive, dark brown speckled, tinted, pinkish brown, brown.
