Launched in 2007, the Millerton Farmer's Market creates a vital community gathering spot, and a means for people to buy fresh, locally grown produce.
Growers from local farms in Dutchess County and surrounding areas bring vegetables, meat, honey, eggs, and prepared foods to market. The market accepts Food stamps/EBT/SNAP, FMNP and WIC checks, and offers coupons to others who need assistance paying for produce. Our "Share the Bounty" CSA enables distributes surplus veggies and produce donated by backyard gardeners to food pantry clients.
Spearheaded by volunteers and sponsored by the North East Community Center, the market promotes and assist local farms and promote the value of food grown locally, with emphasis on the benefits of produce grown and made without chemicals, both for human health and the environment.
A special feature of the market is the Farm and Food Education Program for local teens, who work at the farms and assist the farmers at the market, as well as making and selling their own value-added products. This makes it easier for farmers who can't spare a staff person to come to market, and provides important education and entrepreneurial experience to the students.
