I never envisioned myself raising flying, stinging, venomous insects as a means to augment a meager pension, After moving to the country to escape the urban sprawl of northern Virginia I tried my hand at raising hay. The cost of machine work, seed, lime, fertilizer, and weed treatments left me unfulfilled and much poorer than when I started this undertaking.
Being plagued with allergies most of my adult life, I was deeply interested in a radio ad about the benefits of honey bee pollen for the treatment of allergies. I tried it, it worked and I read all I could on the magnificent little creatures and their contributions to the natural world. I decided to raise honey bees. This seemed to be the best penance I could perform to atone for taking from the earth all my life.
I currently manage 7 colonies using integrated pest management to provide for the health and comfort of my "girls" and to provide chemical and pesticide free products to my customers.
The more I work with my "girls", the greater the awe I hold at their significance to mankind!
