The YT Ranch was founded in 1883 by my great-grandfather, A. W. Wight. Our family began practicing low input, sustainable agriculture shortly after A. W. drilled the first water well on the ranch he homesteaded at Goldsmith, TX before the beginning of the 20th. century. Through the five generations that our famiy has lived on the ranch, we have always adhered to the principle that the ranch has to be preserved in order to pass it on to the next generation.
The hardships of ranching in the desert have taught us that if pastures are overgrazed, and neglected, it takes many years for the rangeland to recover. One of the tools that I use is Longhorn/Corriente cattle. They are an environmentally friendly breed, adapted to our harsh conditions. They require no supplemental feed, and their natural resistance to disease means that we do not have to treat any of them with antibiotics.
Longhorn/corriente beef is lower in fat and cholesterol, yet is juicy and tender, and has abundant flavor.
