Gulf Coast sheep are descendents of Spanish flocks of sheep that were brought to the New World by explorers and settlers in the 1500's. The Spanish sheep in the Southeast were shaped primarily by natural selection, gradually becoming adapted to the heat and humidity of the environment. The Gulf Coast sheep are characterized by the lack of wool on their faces, necks, legs, and bellies. Unfortunately, with the introduction of other, more productive sheep breeds in the Southeast, the Gulf Coast sheep were discarded by most farmers. The breed is now alive due to the preservation efforts of a few southern families
We are a small farm raising Registered Gulf Coast Sheep, heritage breed chickens and heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables. We raise everything without the use of chemicals and we care for our soil with minimal impact from our animals and minimal tilling in the gardens. Our animals all live on pasture and are rotated regularly to let the grasses rest. We currently have meat lambs and eggs available. Visit our website, www.goingtothecountry.com to learn more.

Our 16 acre farm is divided into three plots which have been put into a three year rotation; animal pasture on year one to vegetable production on year two to beneficial grasses on year three, then back to animal pasture.
