Asawana Farms

Asawana Farms is a regenerative organic specialty crop farm in Prince George’s County, Maryland, dedicated to growing fresh, nutrient-rich, and culturally relevant foods. Our work is rooted in Food as Medicine, with a focus on medicinal vegetables and heritage crops such as moringa, bitter leaf, bitter melon, ugu, callaloo, jute leaf, African eggplant, okra, and scent leaf. We honor the principle behind heritage agriculture by preserving and promoting culturally important crop varieties that have nourished African, Caribbean, and immigrant communities for generations.

Asawana Farms provides hands-on education through farm tours, grow-bag demonstrations, volunteer opportunities, and community learning programs. Visitors learn how to grow food in small spaces, prepare soil, use compost, transplant seedlings, care for medicinal vegetables, and understand the connection between healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy communities. Our 5-gallon moringa and bitter leaf grow bag program helps families, patients, seniors, and community members grow Food as Medicine at home on porches, patios, balconies, and small yards.

Through our partnership with University of Maryland Capital Region Health, Asawana Farms has provided grow bags, compost, seedlings, and technical support to help doctors, hospital staff, and patients learn how to grow medicinal vegetables. We also work with food access and community partners to make fresh, culturally relevant produce more available to the public. Our mission is not only to provide food, but to teach people how to grow, harvest, and use healthy vegetables for themselves.

Asawana Farms also welcomes volunteers, students, and organizations interested in agriculture, public health, urban farming, and community wellness. Our volunteer and internship opportunities give participants practical experience in planting, harvesting, composting, seedling production, specialty crop care, Food as Medicine education, and small-scale regenerative farming. We believe farming is a tool for health, culture, education, and self-reliance.
