Garden Fairy News

Wow, time has flew by! Our Spring here has been long and cold. The Farm is now starting to look very beaurtiful after weeks of rain, hail, and even snow. We built frames to go over all the raised beds to either attach plastic or shade cloth to. I usually use grass clippings to hold in the moisture and heat. This year it was holding in the cold so, I had to remove it from some of the plants. Only being 80 miles from Yellowstone, our nights here have only been in the 40's. The Basil had to all be moved into the greenhouses. The cold weather crops have doon very well. This is the first year I have grown Kale and have LOTS of it. I have been educating the public on how to cook with it and how to use sunflower sprouts. They are loving it!!

Las Vegas

WOW, what a week!! I spent a whole week in Las Vegas touring gardens, attended the International Master Gardener Conference, and went on the Lake Mead Cruise. There were 6 of us. We had a blast! Had breakfast by the pool side, went shopping at the Fashion Mall. The Trade Show was great. Fiskar's gave all of us a free prunning saw. Got a couple signed books from the Lecturer's.  The China Town Date Farm was great. I had fresh dates sent to my home. Had a fresh date shake that was awsome!

Now I am back home and the whole week was a snow blizzard;-( I did start seeds though. That gave me a boost. The snow is going fast, this week is to be in the 50's and 60's. Happy Spring to all!

Getting Colder

I think it is getting colder instead of warmer;-( I had minus 7 degrees this morning. I have 9 days till I go to Master Gardner Conference. It is in the 60's in Las Vegas. I can't wait to be warm!!  Robin Williams says, Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!" Bring it on I say. Hope everyone has a great day out there!!

Frosty

It is very frosty this morning. I have 7 degrees. I am working on getting cold frames built so I can use them in the Fall. My husband is in the process of welding frames to put over the raised beds so I can attach plastic or shade cloth to them when needed. This will be great cause sometimes in the early Summer we get hail. This will help protect the crops too. My first year I grew lettuce, I went out to see if I should pick it yet and decided to wait one more day. That afternoon, a huge hail storm came through and wiped everything out. Fortunatly, it was the best thing for the lettuce, (Leaf type) In two weeks I had the best looking lettuce. It even came back stronger and healthy too.

The Sun is shinning today. Maybe it will be warm up!

Garden Fairy

I tried to work in my greenhouse yesterday and the ground is still froze. I hung some racks and shelving so, I feel like I did something. I was getting excited from all the neet stuff I got from the friend that is moving. A book that I had been looking to buy for a while, she had! I bought it from her. It is just what I needed to read at this time. It is  called "So You Want to Start a Nursery" by Tony Avent. It has a lot of good info. in it. Today I am going to organize my garden magazines. I am trying to think of inside jobs. I wanted to get in my potting shed and put up a new shelf unit but there is a snow drift in front of the door as hard as a rock. I guess this is my sign to rest up for when hard work starts up. Wishing everyone a great day!
