So glad the weather is finally cool here in Georgia....almost, too cool! I will soon have to get my inside plants back inside! My lemon tree is shivering! Fall is bittersweet to me, no more growing veggies, but, then again, I do get a break for a few months! PECANS are falling...it won't be long ya'll ! I'll have them up for sale when i have enough gathered.....if you are local and want to pick them up, now is the time to go ahead and place your order!
Gotta run, ya'll have a great evening! deb
I awoke yesterday and today (2 days in a row!) to a pleasant, steady yet on-again off-again rain. This is very welcome in my city, as we have had precious little rain the past month. Ahhh and what a welcome respite to myself, from watering! The trees and other plants are drinking it up!
Unfortunately it is also raining on the local area Tommy Nobis Center's fundraising golf tournament! May God see fit to let it be sunny for a few hours today for the golfers!
When all dries out again, I will be back out gathering seed as usual....this is a busy time of year for seed-savers. And the pecans will be starting to fall soon, as well. I anticipate a busy fall beating out the squirrels and crows for the pecans!
Everyone have a great week!! debbie
Well, it has once again turned H-O-T and i do mean hot! 95 today, which is actually cooler than a couple of other days this week....one day it hit 100! We had a nice thunder-shower to cool us off yesterday, thank goodness, and I didn't have to water my pots....I will have to tonight though. Green beans are coming in again, and tomatoes and peppers are steady. Wish the cucumbers were better, anyone got a trick for cucumbers? If you do for sure let me know....I put down lime the other day hoping that will help - been getting lots of little cukes that just don't grow up! Very disheartening. The herbs are looking fine, though, I fed them some blood meal the other day and they greened right up, they don't look tired like they did! Well this heat makes me tired, too, so I know how they feel! Hope everyone is enjoying the weather and staying cool! Herby gardening!! debbie
Hi, hope everyone is having a great day so far! I have been getting some MUCH NEEDED garden time today, taking a break for a few minutes. We had some good rain yesterday, finally, after about a week of scorching temps.....the basil had to go in the shade for a while it was so hot! Getting a handle on the weeds cropping up, and checking to see if anything new...a few marigolds have poked up since last i checked. Green beans are blossoming again. I'll be back later to let you know how I fared in the garden section at Lowes...I have a $35 gift card that is burning a hole in my pocket and i bet they have some plants i need....lol! See ya later! debbie
Do you know.....there are OVER SIXTY varieties of BASIL?? I've only grown maybe about twenty or so. Basil is one of the most widely-used herbs in the world. Whether it be fresh pesto, spaghetti sauce, or just throw some fresh (or dried) basil on a tomato sandwich, basil is a very versatile herb. It has medicinal qualities, too. One use is as a tea to help settle the stomach.
Basil is a member of the large mint family, and is known botanically as Ocimum basilicum. It has long been used as an embalming and preserving herb, found in mummies of ancient Egypt (Get out!) Perhaps because of its embalming usage, basil was also a symbol of mourning in Greece where it was known as basilikon phuton, meaning magnificent, royal or kingly herb.
Basil may have originated in India, however ancient records from 907 A.D. indicate sweet basil in the Hunan region of China. Basil is also known as St. Joseph's wort. (NOT to be confused with St. John's Wort). Today, basil is not only used as a food flavoring, but also in perfumery, incense, and herbal holistic remedies.
At this time I am growing the following varieties: Sweet basil, genovese basil, large leaf italian basil, boxwood, spicy globe, purple petra, ruffles, blue spice, cinnamon, lemon, lime, opal, amethyst, Christmas....I love them all!
Ya'll have an HERBY DAY! debbie
We finally got a cold snap here in Georgia.....two nights ago it got all the annuals and tender perenniels - BELIEVE IT OR NOT I was actually still harvesting green beans up until December 3!! Amazing! Anyhow no more green beans this year! LOL! I just want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS, and I pray everyone has a peaceful, happy and safe holiday season! God Bless! debbie from debbie's garden
Good day to you all! As I looked out this morning, I realized that it was raining, AGAIN! I was able to harvest some seed over the weekend, but it's been wet all week now. Hopefully I will be able to get back out there in a day or so. We actually had FROST yesterday morning, and it went to 31 degrees! That's the first time it's dipped below freezing this winter.
As an aside, I want to thank everyone who helped deplete my stash of pecans this year! I had a couple of great pies over Thanksgiving, and hope you did the same!
Everyone have a great Wednesday and stay dry! :-) deb
