It seems to me that we were all complaining about the rain just a short time ago. Now it seems like we need it again. But, I sure do hope that it holds off this Saturday. Rainy market days are no fun for customers and farmers alike. Guess the weather and Mother Nature is the reason that farming for a living is such a risky business! And, yes...it is a business as well as being a passion. Our farmers come from all walks of life, from the backyard gardener who is passionate about heirlooms to the farmer who plants row after row of veggies on two different farms! The great part is that no matter how small or large our farmers business is, you can be assured that they grew or raised everything that they sell! Don't forget they also create value added items like jams, baked goods and herb seasoning too! The business of farming is a whole bunch more than putting a seed in the ground and hoping it grows...although I do that every year with mixed results. Lol So, what will our wonderful farmers be bringing to the market this Saturday? Here's a hint...
TOMATOES
GREEN BEANS
LETTUCE
SQUASH
ZUCCHINI
POTATOES
RADISHES
GREENS
ONIONS
SUGAR SNAP PEAS
BROCCOLI
SHELL PEAS
CABBAGE

AND, PLENTY OF FRIENDLY FACES!!!

Why is it a "J" day?
That's because Judy, Jane, John and Jonathon will be selling their goodies this Tuesday!
Look for Judy to bring her wonderful jams, probably the last of the strawberries...but, the first of the blueberries!
Jane is back and she'll be bringing her great basil, beautiful cut flowers, sugar snap peas, garlic scapes, green onions and lettuce!
John will be coming from Science Hill loaded down with his delicious homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce!
If you are looking for beautiful hanging baskets, then Jonathon is the farmer to see! They are just gorgeous, full and reasonably priced! Maybe you need some bedding plants or herbs...he has those too. And, he'll be bringing broccoli, green onions, shell peas and sugar snaps!
It won't be just a “J” day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market because Vicki from Botanica will be there too. She'll be bringing her herb plants, assorted hanging baskets and planters.
And, you never know who else just might show up!!!

Of course you'll still find some spring fruits and veggies too...look for strawberries, asparagus, lettuce, green onions, spinach, sugar snap peas and greens!
What else will our farmers be bringing to the market on Saturday? How about rhubarb, eggs, honey, baked goods, jams & jellies, herb seasoning, veggie and herb plants and hanging baskets galore! Who knows what else might make its way to the market...I am surprised almost every Saturday. :)

Have a safe Memorial Day weekend and please take a moment to remember our service members and their families.
It's Tuesday market time! The farmer participation is still a bit small but it will be growing each week as the growing season picks up. If you are looking for wonderful homegrown, local strawberries then the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is the place to be this Tuesday! You'll find other spring veggies like asparagus, lettuce and radishes too! Don't forget the wonderful homemade jams and jellies. Or, the beautiful hanging floral baskets, herb plants and veggie plants.
So, stop by on your way home from work...we're open until 6:30! Or, beat the traffic and shop early...we open at 3!
Where are we located at 3450 Richmond Rd. in the tree lined parking lot of Pedal the Planet and Fast Signs...right next to the Glenn Auto Mall. Plenty of free and convenient parking.
Remember, we are Lexington's only
100% homegrown/produced farmers market...we guarantee it!
Of course, that means no locally grown corn yet!
But...it's coming! :)
I couldn't believe that I actually saw red tomatoes at the market last Saturday! Granted, they were grown in a greenhouse and there were not many of them...but what a treat after a rainy and cold day. We thoroughly enjoyed a BLT with locally grown vegetables and homemade bread! The tomato was sweet, the lettuce was crisp and the bread was wonderful!!! Honest to gosh locally grown and produced is well worth the trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. :)

I have come to a conclusion...the weather in Kentucky makes absolutely no sense to anyone! We've had weeks of rain. Below average temperatures for this time of the year. Definite lack of sunshine. Spring has supposedly “sprung” but what exactly does that mean? The past two days have been more like the middle of summer with the heat and humidity! And, who knows...we could have snow by the weekend. Just kidding...I hope!
What I am trying to get across is how hard it is for farmers to bring their bounty to the market each week. They plan all winter long and look forward to early spring to sow their seeds. Then they keep their fingers crossed for great weather...hopefully that happens. This year it has not but our farmers continue to show up each Saturday with the best they have to offer and let me tell you...it has been great!!! Here's a bit of what you find this Saturday! :)

It was so nice to see the sun shine last Saturday! Hopefully Mother Nature will be almost as nice this week. Somehow the Kentucky Derby is so much more fun to watch when the sun is shining. And, Mother's Day is not quite as happy when it is raining...mom deserves a bright and sunny day. :)
Let's start with Derby Day and the wonderful goodies available to make your party a true Kentucky experience. You can't have a derby meal without asparagus and we'll have plenty available! Derby Day means spring time and what's better than a fresh lettuce, green onion and radish salad! But, the one item that truly means Kentucky Derby is mint!!! Every proper mint julep deserves Kentucky Colonel Mint and you'll be able to find that this Saturday too! So, start your Derby Day out early by joining us at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market.
Next comes Mother's Day on Sunday! How about a beautiful plant or day lily for the special mom in your life. Maybe something sweet just like she is...jam cake or honey! Or, you could prepare a special meal for her using hand blended herb seasoning on those wonderful fresh veggies! Wishing all those special gals a Happy Mother's Day!
Even with all of the rainy weather lately, the BGFM is growing as the season progresses! Remember, we are a 100% homegrown/produced market...that means no corn or tomatoes yet! But, we do have mater plants!!! Here's a bit of what you'll find on Saturday...

I truly believe that this just might be a Mother Nature “yippee” kind of Saturday at the market. Finally a market day without rain!
Look for all sorts of fresh, homegrown spring goodness. You'll find asparagus, crisp lettuce, various greens, carrots, radishes, rhubarb, green onions and even some arugula! Tuesday & Saturday market...3450 Richmond Rd. in the Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet parking lot, right next to the Glenn Auto Mall.
Why
Because we think everyone who shops at a farmers market deserves to be talking to the farmer who grew, baked, made or created what they are selling!
Our farmers are also trained and certified in the GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) program!
It's just another way that we show you how much we care about what we do!
And, each farmer is certified Kentucky Proud!!!
Hope to see you at Lexington's largest
100% homegrown/produced farmers market!
Our customers voted us #1 in Kentucky!!!!
Looks like Mother Nature might be sending us some rain tomorrow. But, we'll still be there with fresh spring goodies like asparagus, lettuce, greens, onions and radishes. Of course, you'll also be able to find some wonderful jams, whipped honey, baked goods and herb seasoning. And, Roger, the tomato guy will be there taking orders for his wonderful heirloom maters!
As I was typing up the list of available items I started to think that it sure doesn't look like much will be available...what, no corn or tomatoes? Then I remembered that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is just that, a real farmers market with 100% homegrown or produced items. Unfortunately that does mean that you won't find corn or tomatoes tomorrow because they are not in season in Kentucky! Instead, you'll be guaranteed that you are supporting honest to gosh real farmers who grow instead of buying to resell. We think it's worth the lack of a few items...especially on this Earth Day!

Opening day wasn't exactly what we had hoped for...weather wise. But, our loyal customers sure made the day worthwhile! It was cold, windy and rainy most of the day and the cars still kept pulling in and folks came up to our farmers to let them know how thrilled they were to have us back. Of course, they bought goodies too. In fact, the lettuce, asparagus, radishes and green onions all sold out early.
I did ask the farmers if they were ready for the Tuesday market and found out that NO...they are not. I promise that I will let you know when the Bluegrass Farmers' Market will be opening on Tuesday's. Until then, mark off Saturday morning on your calendar.
Yup, it's that time again...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market opens their 2011 season this Saturday!
It's been a long winter and our farmers are raring to go. In fact, they are so darn busy only a few have let me know what they will be bringing to the market on opening day!
I do know that our tomato guy, Roger, will be on hand to take orders for his heirloom tomato and pepper plants. The folks from Herb'n Renewal will be there with their hand blended herb seasoning and wonderful Zuckie cookies! Judy will be bringing her great homemade jams and her fresh asparagus. I will try to update as I hear from our farmers but I can imagine springs finest locally grown...lettuce, green onions, radishes, etc...will be available on Saturday. UPDATE...Robert will be bringing asparagus and other spring goodies. And, I have been told that Kirby will be coming with spring veggies too!
We're looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces this Saturday, April 16th!
