Bluegrass Farmers' Market Goodies!
Both of the Saturday markets are sure to be filled with all sorts of summer goodness! Our satellite market at Mill Pond is growing in leaps and bounds. And so is our original Richmond Rd. Location...it's full to capacity now! That's why we had to open the satellite market at Mill Pond. It seems like folks appreciate knowing that they can be guaranteed that their purchases are 100% homegrown or produced by our market members! And, our farmers love the fact that they are able to sell their produce along with other growers who appreciate the hard work that farming presents. Summer Goodness at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
Our thanks to everyone for making our Customer Appreciation Day one of the best ever! Both Saturday market locations had record crowds and we saw many smiling faces as we watched the flood of Wildcat blue market totes being filled with market goodies! Congratulations to all of our winners of the door prizes. I did get to watch our grand prize winner go through her tote bag that was loaded with something from every farmer at the market...she was thrilled! Everyone else will get to spend their Bluegrass Market Bucks in the coming weeks and those that won the gift certificates to Alafalfa restaurant...enjoy! :) Our farmers had a great time and we're already thinking about what to do for our wonderful customers in the near future.
We are happy to announce that the Mill Pond Shopping Center satellite market is going to start selling on Thursday afternoons from 3 until 6:30...that's in addition to the Saturday market! Our little market sure has grown from the original 10 farmers at our Richmond Rd. location...we're almost 30 farmers strong now! And, we had a waiting list which is why we now have the satellite market. All I can say is that you'll find 100% homegrown goodness at both market locations!!!

Terrific Tuesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
Wow, what a great Customer Appreciation Day we had on Saturday! We met many new customers and smiled at even more return patrons. The farmers at the new satellite market in Mill Pond Center said they were thrilled with the turnout too. :) It gave them a chance to meet new folks and to let them know that the Thursday market is now open from 3 until 6:30!

I have to share a little story with you all. I received a phone call earlier this week from a farmer who was interested in selling his produce at a farmers market in Lexington. His first question almost set me back a bit, but I did not hesitate as I answered it...honestly! He asked me why I sold my goods at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and not at the other market. I first explained that Lexington had more than two market associations selling at various locations throughout the area. I was not familiar with the two newest markets so I couldn't comment on those. I was very familiar with the largest market in Lexington, The Lexington Farmers Market, and I went on to explain that I had sold there for almost 11 years. The difference between them and the one that I now belong to, The Bluegrass Farmers' Market, is that this market is 100% homegrown or produced and they guarantee it! I am serious...they inspect all farms before allowing anyone to join. They make sure that each member is GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) trained and each member has to be a certified Kentucky Proud member. In other words, they are truly what I would call a farmers market. I had just started to spout the good things about the other market when he interrupted me and said he had heard enough to warrant filling out an application for our market. :) It always makes me feel good when I know that I made the right decision in moving to a smaller but 100% homegrown market! But, please do not get me wrong...the other market has plenty to offer too! I just prefer knowing that I am buying from the folks who actually grew, raised, baked or produced what they were selling.
Not sure why I had to share that experience except that I guess I appreciate the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and its dedication to really local products as much as I appreciate the folks who understand that and after all...it is

Hot Tuesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
Hot, Hot, Hot! Yup, Mother Nature is having a heat wave and that means you don't want to heat up the kitchen, so how about grilling some veggies! We enjoyed grilled potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, garlic and zucchini on Sunday. It was sooooo easy and delicious! I just cubed, sliced or diced all of the veggies...tossed them with some canola oil and seasoned then to taste...wrap in an aluminum foil “bag” and grill on a low flame and then turn after about 30 minutes. It took our goodies about 50 minutes to cook thoroughly but it all depends on how small you cut your veggies. All I know is we sure did enjoy our “dump on your plate” grilled veggies.
The best part about this easy to fix goodies is that everything will be available at the market today!!! Yup, the Tuesday market on Richmond Rd. will have loads of summer goodness available. Here's just a sampling of what you'll find...

Super Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
I was walking through the Richmond Rd. market last week and I had to smile to myself. I kept thinking about the years when I shopped at a grocery store and purchased onions, potatoes, squash, etc. I had no idea what variety they were and I'll almost guarantee that the produce clerks didn't either...heck, it was a red or white potato! A red, purple, yellow or white onion! And, squash was yellow or green! Boy, am I glad that my farmer friends have educated me to the point where I actually know what potatoes are good for frying, which ones I should mash and I also know that only certain squash work great for grilling. That's the great part of a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market...the farmers actually grew what they are selling and they know about their products...just ask them for advice when trying something new.

Bluegrass Farmers' Market News!!!
We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. I know that we enjoyed the fireworks, the patriotic music and most of all the fresh corn and tomatoes to go along with our hamburgers! To me the 4th of July holiday seems to be the real start of summer and all of the fresh goodness that comes with the warm weather. I'm talking corn, tomatoes, green beans, squash, new potatoes and peppers...it just doesn't get any better than that!

Speaking of “both” markets, we'd just like to let everyone know that our satellite market at Mill Pond Shopping Center is still going (and growing) strong even though there are no signs up. It seems like vandals stole the 4' x 8' banners and even took the posts that they were hanging from. We're not sure who would steal farmers market signs but the Lexington Police Department is looking into it. But, we're happy to report that it will be business as usual at Mill Pond! More good news about the satellite market...it's growing in leaps and bounds! In fact, one of our Richmond Rd. farmers, Robert from Stonehome Farm is now going to be selling at the new market! That just means that our customers might find that a trip to two markets each Saturday is the thing to do! :)

The parking lot is also paved and that makes it very stroller and wheelchair friendly!

Celebration Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
This weekend is a time to celebrate. We get to bust out the red, white and blue and enjoy our freedom by watching parades, smiling at firework displays and eating summertime favorites at picnics. Yup, it's the 4th of July or Independence Day! A day to celebrate our wonderful country and the people that make it so great. That means the folks who work hard to provide us all with the one thing we all need...food! And, there's no better way to show how much we appreciate the farmers than to support them by buying locally grown, raised or produced food. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is Lexington's largest 100% homegrown/produced farmers market. That means that our farmers actually grew the fruits and veggies, raised the cattle, baked the breads, made the jams and nothing has been purchased for resale! We guarantee it, it's the way a farmers market should be.
Okay, I can't think of anything better on my July 4th picnic table than fresh grilled corn, sliced tomatoes and a juicy burger! Guess what? Terrific Tuesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
I hope you all made it to the market on Saturday...we had a ball watching the “lil” ones fill their free market totes. There were smiles everywhere! Make sure you mark your calendars because we'll be doing a customer appreciation day and giving away “big” people market totes on July 16th!

"Lil" Market Shoppers Day at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
We love to see young folks show up at the market. And, this Saturday we are going to celebrate the “lil” market shoppers by giving them all free market tote bags! And, who knows what other surprises might just pop up!!! So, bring the kids to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market this Saturday so they can shop with their new blue tote bag. :)

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Saturday Goodies!
This is it...the last week of spring and the official start of summer! That means that we are getting closer to corn season in Kentucky! It seems to be one of the crops that customers want more than anything. The other one would be tomatoes and we have those right now at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
After a long, cold winter and a very wet spring nothing seems to taste better than fresh veggies from the market! Grocery store stuff just doesn't get it. Try grilling a total vegetable meal made up of squash, sweet onions, tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli and even greens! Yup, you can take any variety of greens...kale, Swiss chard, etc. and place a good handful into a foil package, sprinkle with some salt, pepper and a wee bit of olive oil and grill along with your other veggies! Of course, you could get adventurous and try some herb seasoning too...it's available at the market each Saturday.
Don't forget that special guy in your life! This Sunday is Father's Day and what a great treat it would be if you made him king for the day! Start out with a special breakfast omelet made with fresh country eggs (just got a call and there will be NO eggs at the market this week, sorry) and fresh veggies. How about a burger on the grill for lunch...top it with fresh tomatoes and onions! Dinner can be a very special event with a wonderful steak from one of our local beef producers. And, on the side serve some steamed new potatoes and broccoli! How about a bowl of fresh blueberries or a jam cake or a chocolate zucchini cake to make the meal complete! Okay...I'm hungry now and I am not even a dad!!! What a great way to say I love you to your dad! :)
