We did it! The Bluegrass Farmers' Market was voted #1 in Kentucky in the "America's Favorite Farmers Market" contest run by the American Farmland Trust! That's right, we won the honor of being voted the #1 market by our loyal customers and followers of homegrown goodness. And, by the number count, we even tied for 20th place in all of America in the small market category.
It just goes to show that customers do know local, homegrown and good when they see it...even if it means the market is on the small side! As our shoppers all know, it's tough trying to compete with a market that has so many different things to offer. But, they have proven that sometimes bigger is not better and 100% homegrown/produced makes up for it!
Our thanks to all of our loyal customers who helped us by voting. We really do appreciate knowing that you do care about how much hard work, effort and time that we spend to bring you nothing but the best each week, really does matter. We promise, we won't let you down in the days to come...fall is almost here and that means a new variety of crops will be available at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market real soon!
Thank you for your continued support and patronage...we really do grow for you!
Tuesday is sure to be a great afternoon at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! How can you beat fresh, homegrown tomatoes, corn, beans, potatoes, squash, eggplant and peppers! And, don't forget those homemade jams, jellies and baked goods. If you are looking for some sweet homegrown goodness try a watermelon or some fresh raspberries!
They'll all be at the market today from 3 until 6:30!
Where...at 3450 Richmond Rd. In the parking lot of Pedal the Planet and Fast Signs, right next to the Glenn Auto Mall. Plenty of free parking available too!
100% homegrown/produced...always!
And, just in case you have not voted for the Bluegrass Farmers' Market yet, you have until midnight today to vote. http://www.farmland.org/vote
First off, let me say thank you for all of the votes that our customers have cast so that we might become one of America's Favorite Farmers Markets. We are currently ahead (by a slim margin)of all the markets in Kentucky!!! But, there are still a few more days to vote and who knows what will happen, so please keep those votes coming in. Just go to http://www.farmland.org/vote and cast your vote for the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. We really do appreciate it. :)

Local and homegrown are always winners but the Bluegrass Farmers' Market has the blue ribbons to prove it! Two of our member farmers scored big at the Kentucky State Fair. The competition is fierce but they still managed to bring home the coveted blue ribbons!
We're very proud to announce that Keith Green of Honey Dew Apiary won six blue ribbons with his fabulous honey. Way to go Keith! We knew that your honey was the very best around but you sure made us extra proud of you with your entries at the Kentucky State Fair.
Kirby Overman of Overman's Bluegrasss Fruits & Vegetables also scored big in the ribbon department! This man can grow veggies and his showing at the Kentucky State Fair sure showed it. So far he has won ribbons for his eggplant, Halloween pumpkins, large cushaw, pie pumpkins, striped cushaw, sweet banana peppers, beets and green beans! I told you that the Overman's know how to grow and their blue ribbons show it! He wanted me to let you know that he still has the opportunity to win in the senior division. Gotta love that, an old guy growing award winning veggies!
The members of the Bluegrass Farmers' Market take great pride in what they grow, raise, bake and make and it sure shows when you have folks that win at the Kentucky State Fair! We congratulate them and say that we are darn proud to have them as friends and fellow farmers at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!!!
WTG you two! Thumbs up for both of you.
P.S. Wish I had the brains to remember to bring the camera so I could have taken a picture of our winners. I'll do it next week at the market. Lol
Oh, one more thing...we do have farm fresh eggs available!!!! Just thought I would add that little comment seen as how America seems too be going through a “bad egg” thing. :(
Once again...local is always better and apparently safer!!!!
School is back in session, the craft fairs are starting and football is about to begin! That makes it sound like the farmers market is about over...but, we're still going strong! There's still plenty of summer goodness available and the fall fruits and veggies will be with us soon. The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is in full operation until October 30th and it only promises to get better with all that fall has to offer including samples of chili, soups and stews!
Another important date is August 31st! It's the last day to vote for America's Favorite Farmers Market! As of this morning the Bluegrass Farmers' Market was number one in Kentucky!!!! Keep those votes coming. Just go to http://www.farmland.org/vote and vote for us...if we win, so do you!

I sat down this morning and made a list of some of the items available this Saturday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and noticed that we had almost everything from A to Z! Have to admit that the only “Q” I could come up with was Quince and I don't think anyone at our market is making quince jam, so I had to fudge on that letter and use the word quality...something we all strive for at our market! The letter “U” stumped me too and then I thought of the tomatoes that aren't perfectly round and red...our farmers sell them as “seconds” even though there is absolutely nothing wrong with their innards! The only other letter that I had trouble with was “X” and it really bugged me so I started a search and found out that Xanthic means yellow and we have plenty of yellow fruits and veggies available.
So, here is my list of A to Z items available at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market this week...
Anaheim chile pepper, Apple butter
Butternut squash, Beets, Basil, Banana peppers, Beef, Blueberries, Baked goods
Cucumbers,Cantaloupe, Cushaw, Corn, Cut flowers
Dried herb seasoning
Eggplant, Eggs
Fruit jams
Green beans, Garlic
Honey, Honey comb
Italian Giant tomatoes, Italian herb seasoning
Jalapeno peppers, Jams, Jellies
Krasnodar heirloom tomatoes, Kale
Leeks
Melons
New potatoes
Okra,Onions
Peaches, Peppers, Potatoes
Quality, always!!!
Red Norland potatoes, Rhubarb
Squash, Shallots, Salsa mix
Tomatoes, Tomatillas
Ugly maters...great for canning and cooking!
Vine ripe tomatoes
Watermelons
Xanthic squash...just means they are yellow!
Yellow squash
Zucchini, Zinnias
WOW, we really do have a bunch of great homegrown goodness available!

It's Tuesday and that means our farmers will be bringing their homegrown goodness to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
The tomatoes are plentiful and come in all sizes, colors and shapes. Why not try a yellow, pink or green striped one for a change...they are wonderful too! Our knowledgeable farmers will be able to tell you which tomato is best for your needs...just ask them!
If you haven't treated yourself to a freshly dug potato, do it! Believe me, they are not your “stored for months” grocery store variety. The flavor is amazing and they are not just potatoes...each variety has different qualities. Some are great for frying, some are great for salads and some are wonderful “mashers!” Talk to your farmer, they know cause they grew them!
And, oh my gosh...who knew there were so many different types of squash! Yellow, green, long, skinny, short, fat, “bakeable,” “stuffable” and some just perfect for a saute' pan! Once again...talk to the grower and ask questions, who knows you might just discover a new found favorite!
If you happen to love cucumbers as much as I do you'll be in seventh heaven this week! I love bread and butter pickles but the thought of canning scares the heck out of me so I found this fabulous recipe for a freezer pickle...easy and wonderful without the fear of canning! Thanks Sherry! :)
Nontraditional Sweet Freezer Pickles |
If you are a jam and jelly lover but again, hate the thought of canning...why not let the expert farmers do it for you! You'll be able to find homemade jams, jellies and butters in all flavors...even spicy ones!
Now, how can anyone pass up a melon! As they say, 'tis the season! Lol Watermelon and cantaloupes galore and all just ready for you to enjoy!
I know I have missed a bunch so take some time and visit the Bluegrass Farmers' Market today on your way home from the office...you'll be glad you did!

The hot days of summer are sure upon us! It sure makes you appreciate the many hours that our farmers spend out in their fields tending to the crops that get freshly harvested for the market. I know I appreciate their work with each bite that I take out of a fresh tomato, a crisp cucumber, savoring that wonderful sauteed zucchini and smiling from ear to ear as I bite down on that delicious corn! Pardon my pun but I am still grinning as I enjoy the juicy and sweet cantaloupe that I purchased on Tuesday. My thanks to the farmers who have weathered the heat wave so that I can enjoy their bounty in my cool home. :)
