It's May and in Kentucky that can only mean one thing...it's time for the Kentucky Derby! Only March stands out more with its “Madness” in our Commonwealth. While the thoroughbreds might be running for the roses, our farmers are running into the fields and gardens to harvest the very best homegrown goodness available in Kentucky! Well, maybe they are walking but you know what I mean. lol The excitement of knowing that you have produced something that makes our customers smile is about as good as it gets. Unless you happen to pick the Kentucky Derby winner! Speaking of winners, we have a few of our farmers celebrating Derby Day by running some specials, giving away some freebies and chances to win some market items! Who says we don't know how to celebrate at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!
And, by the way...both Bluegrass Farmers' Market locations will have a limited supply of mint available for those Derby Day Mint Juleps!
Here's a bit of what you'll find at our markets tomorrow...
LIQUOR BARN HAMBURG
McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing some Derby Day mint, some asparagus, their wonderful Salanova lettuce, red Russian kale, arugula, a little baby spinach, some spicy mesclun mix, baked goods, jams and jellies and bean soup mixes. And, if you spend $5 you'll get a $1 off coupon to use at your next visit to their booth!
Tomatoes, Etc. will be bringing the long anticipated heirloom tomato and pepper transplants and packages of Egyptian Walking Onion sets! One more thing that always brings smiles to faces, young and old...the Red Robin Tomato plants that Roger gives to youngsters, with written parental directions. This is to encourage them to become lifelong gardeners! Yes, he'll have some available tomorrow and yes, he does give them away! Happy Derby Day!
Herb'n Renewal is pleased to announce that the Zucchini, Apple'n Oat Thingies are back! You'll also find all 29 of their hand blended herb seasoning mixes. And, hand crafted soaps...including scent free ones! Jane's Garden Flowers & Herbs had hoped to be at the market this week but alas, Jane had to work...never fear because her wonderful lettuce and kale will be available at Herb'n Renewal! And, to celebrate Derby Day and Karin and Drew's 21st anniversary, they are giving folks a chance to sign up to win a gift basket with 21 herb blends in it and valued at $75 and no purchase is necessary!
Kelly's Kobe Beef and Herman's Happy Hogs will have Kobe beef boneless ribeyes, N.Y. Steaks, sirloin steaks, chuck steaks, round steaks, burger patties and ground beef! All of these products are born, raised ,and harvested on their farm. They are all U.S.D.A. Inspected, FREE of Antibiotics,Steroids or Growth Stimulants! And, to celebrate Derby Day, they are giving two lucky customers, who make a purchase, the chance to win either 2 boneless 3/4” hand cut and aged ribeye steaks or 2 bone in 3/4” pork chops! The drawing is at noon, so shop early and sign up to win!
Heavenly Homestead Cheese will be making their debut appearance this week...the rain last week kinda put a damper on things. But, the great news is they will be bringing 9 varieties of cheeses including some new cheeses for them, provolone, asiago, windsor, and zagora. The last two are unique to their farm! Come welcome them to the market!
Pennington Farm & Garden will have various herb plants, bedding plants, flowers, cut parsley, tomato plants and beautiful hanging baskets!
AZUR RESTAURANT & PATIO
Emnett Acres Farm will make their first 2015 market season appearance tomorrow! They will be bringing green onions, hand shelled and picked black walnuts from last fall's crop, pumpkin and zucchini breads, canna lily bulbs and potted black eyed susans! Nice to have them back!
Stone Burr Farm will be on hand with their delicious lamb and mint to go with it!
Breeze Point Produce will not be at the market, but their wonderful mint will! Yup, something other than the market came up and they will have to prolong their start of the 2015 market season but one of the other farmers will have their mint! Think Juleps!!!
Remember, there are always surprises and you never know who else might show up at either market location!
Hope to see you all tomorrow!
