The Harvest Farm

Growin' good things
(Dallas, Georgia)

Spring is here again

Spring is here again, or did we really have a winter at all?  We have been really busy this season working on closing in our hoop houses to give us more reliable temperature control for growing during the cooler months.  We have also added another green house to extend our seedling growing process this year.  We have been able to get a head start on spring and summer vegetable plants with this extra growing habitat.  We now have over 200 laying hens of different types, my favorites being the Bresse breed.  We are ramping up production from last year and adding lots of mature compost to our growing areas.  Automatic irrigation is going to help prevent  some of the problems we experienced last year with the drought here in Georgia. We added bees to the mix last year and that is another subject! They are more complicated than we thought, but the pollination was so much better.  Exciting times here on the farm at this time of the year. Hope to see you this season at the Marietta Square Farmer's Market every weekend.

Warming up

Things are really warming up this spring quickly as we prepare for a great summer season. We did not have much of a winter, so our plants got off to a great start this year and are growing like crazy. We already have our first crop of summer squash as well as early peas. Tomatoes and cucumber are on the vines and quickly developing into mouth watering temptations. Our new bees are working so hard to fill our first hive with delicious honey and certainly have plenty of pollen and nectar to choose from. We are working hard to bring you the best produce we can and the satisfaction at the end of the day is amazing. We sit out on our porch in the evening with dirt everywhere on us that is not covered by clothing, and think about all of the families that will enjoy the fruits of our labor!

Spring fling

For most people, working from sun up to sunset is not very exciting. I know that before we found our farm in Dallas, Georgia, I thought I knew what we were getting in to. I can say that I am not disappointed. Right now, Mark and I are preparing the gardens, planting thousands of seeds, and building new chicken pens and runs. It is all to bring out the best in this land so we can bring the best food to our family and yours.
