Food Matters is an experience unlike anything else. We provide convenient, high quality food, wine, and service. Whether you come to dine in our full service restaurant, visit the wine bar, pick up catering, take advantage of easy grab and go food, or to dine in our private dining room, you will experience our staff's passion for our products. We seek to focus on seasonal and superior products from artisanal producers that are local and from around the world. We are also proud to offer a year-round CSA using produce, herbs, and flowers from local farmers as well as our own community garden.

Food Matters was started by two chefs, two long time Alexandria residents, and a group of people who believed in them. The basic goal was to create an environment where people could come for food, wine, and a sense of community without intimidation, pretense, or pressure. We believe in cooking with integrity and respect for ingredients as well as making wine choices based on what we believe people will enjoy. We strive to connect people to the source of sustenance by sharing the stories behind our products.

Food Matters and its owners have strong ties to the community and we believe that it is just as important to give back to the community as it is to be successful. For that reason we have chosen charities that focus on both Alexandrians in need as well as the overwhelming issue of daily hunger in our world.

We invite you to Food Matters to eat, drink, shop, and learn.

We support the following farms:

Northern Neck Fruits and Vegetables Help From Above Farm Path Valley Farm Landis Dale Farm Przystawik Community Garden Ivy Brand Farm Roseda Beef Babes In The Woods Pork Virginia Lamb Pipe Dreams Fromage Lewes Dairy Just To Name a Few...

Food Matters hosts several dinners a year using seasonal and local products, some only available for a short time or in small quantities. We also believe strongly that our children should eat as well as we do and that means exposing them to the same foods we eat and presenting them with opportunities to learn about and taste new foods. We send out a monthly e-mail newsletter with details about these events.

Food Matters is my favorite restaurant in the Alexandria area. The food is always inventive and fresh, and the atmosphere is one that appreciates environmentalism and the process that gets the food from the ground onto the table.

There are lots of good items on the menu to choose from... currywurst, quiche, french toast... but my favorite is the Roseda Angus Beef Hamburger on a Toasted Bun with Garlic Butter and Hand-Cut Fries.... [more]
