The Gross Family Dairy is composed of Guernsey (and a few jersey!) cows. Guernsey milk contains 12% more protein, 33% more vitamin D, 25% more vitamin A and 15% more calcium than average milk! Their milk also is high in A2 protein.
The two most common types of protein found in milk are A1 and A2 type protein. The type/ratio of protein varies from breed to breed. The US milk supply which is almost entirely Holstein cow's milk, on average is composed of 95% A1 protein. Guernsey milk is the opposite - averaging 95% A2 protein.
Research is being conducted which is showing that people who think they are lactose intolerant because they feel sick after drinking milk, may just be intolerant to A1 protein.
Lactose intolerance is sensitivity to SUGAR in milk. A1 protein intolerance is sensitivity to A1 PROTEIN. The confusion between these two issues arises because the symptoms are the same (cramping, bloating, digestive issues). A study in the UK found that 1 out of 5 people think they are lactose intolerant but only 1 out of 20 of those people lack the enzyme to break down the sugar (lactose). As lactose intolerance is more widely known many people assume the diagnosis. For some people the problem may not be lactose (sugar) it may be the protein.
Guernsey milk has been nicknamed "Guernsey Gold" because it has a gold hue. The color is due to the fact that it contains beta-carotene the vitamin pre-cursor that makes carrots orange! Beta carotene is well known as an antioxidant and immunity booster. Beta carotene promotes eye and skin health and aids in the formation of bones and teeth. Additionally, the Cancer Fund of America Inc. has published information stating, "Diets rich in foods containing Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and a precursor of Vitamin A called beta carotene, may reduce the risk of certain cancers".
