Heirloom Cattle (HCC) is a small native grass-fed and finished cattle ranch owned and run by the Peplow family. Our ranch management strategy depends on ecological restoration and resource conservation. We planted our pastures exclusively to native plant species that can tolerate lower inputs and flash or high intensity low frequency grazing. We did away with non-native pastures that demanded high inputs of water and fertilizer and displace wildlife. We restored our wetlands and rehabilitated ground water and exhausted soils. Ecological restoration has resulted in an ecosystem diverse in plant and animal species. Our cattle live in harmony within a complex eco-system. A significant value of our sustainable, organic farm is that our water use has been reduced by 80%. We use little fossil fuel. We do not need to fertilize our pastures because they fit into our microclimate and are not over-grazed. Because we have a complex system of plants for our cattle to graze on, we do not need to cultivate additional feed. We believe in this land. Our family has lived in the Yakima and Kittitas valleys for five generations. Our love for this land, and our commitment to pass it on to the next generation, preserved of its natural beauty, native plants and a healthy ecosystem is a family commitment. Our ranch is a small, family operation that cares for each animal as an individual. Our animals are never penned, and enjoy a variety of native grasses and plants as their cuisine, living in harmony with the natural habitat of many wildlife species.
