Accokeek Foundation (National Colonial Farm)

Family Farm
Many people are aware of endangered species in the wild, but very few realize that domesticated livestock species are also threatened. The livestock seen grazing in the fields at Piscataway Park are rare breeds of animals with unique genetic traits. Preserving these breeds and the biodiversity they represent ensures a more secure food system for future generations.

The Accokeek Foundation, a partner of the National Park Service in Piscataway Park, breeds American Milking Devon cattle, Hog Island sheep, Ossabaw hogs, Spanish goats, and various heritage poultry breeds as part of the heritage breed livestock conservation program.

Farmers interested in adding heritage breeds to their herds and flocks can purchase breeding stock and market animals from the Accokeek Foundation's barnyard. We sell American Milking Devon cattle, Ossabaw hogs, and Hog Island sheep.

Fiber artists interested in working with heritage breed wool can purchase Hog Island fleece and fiber from the barnyard as well. We sell raw fleeces, roving, and hand-spun yarn.

Farm tours and events are offered throughout the year. Check the calendar at accokeek.org to learn more or register.

Proceeds from farm sales support the Accokeek Foundation's work to preserve these unique and endangered animal breeds.
