I'm making slight changes to the format of my CSA next season. For the winter/spring season I'll be offering two different membership plans, a "Soup and Salad Share" plan and a "My Choice Share" plan. With both plans your upfront payment becomes credits in an Owen River Farm Account.
With the Soup and Salad Share I put together a thoughtful assortment of produce each week using up to a predetermined amount of credits $10-$25. If something causes low production during a week (such as harsh weather), I may use less credits from the account and pack a smaller share. This is the best choice if you aren't a picky vegetable eater and all you want to do is pick up your share each week.
With the My Choice Share, you will receive an email each Sunday morning with your remaining ORF Account balance and a product selection form allowing you to design your own share. This is the best choice if you won't eat certain vegetables (like turnips) and don't mind using the computer to make your order. This plan makes it easy to order more some weeks and less others, say if you're having guests over and want to get extra lettuce, or a family member goes out of town so you only need half the produce for a week.
With either plan, consider how much produce you'd like to eat each week. $15 is enough for 4-5 items of 4 small servings each. Usually multiple salad or soup items can be put together for a large dish. There's a 4 week, ($40) minimum.
The expected vegetables for January through May include: lettuce, salad mix, endive, kale, collards, chard, turnips (both salad and cooking types), rutabaga, radishes, carrots, beets, kohlrabi and possibly broccoli and rapini. Parsley and turmeric will be available herbs/spices.
Spring crops begin in May with cucumbers and dill and then summer squash. Eggplant and peppers usually come in by the end of June.
