Breadroot Cooperative

I love Breadroot; I found it shortly after I moved to Rapid City, and soon began shopping there. Then I became a member, and then a volunteer - so you can see I really think it's something special. Breadroot is open to the public, but members get a discount. It's mostly staffed by volunteers, and they really try to pass along good products and deals to consumers. Some items are designated "REACH" items. Those are high-nutrient foods sold to the community at wholesale prices, so that anyone can afford them. The Co-op makes no profit off those items, which change from time to time, but usually include about 10 foods such as brown rice, almonds, grapefruit, and kale. Breadroot has foods for all health-conscious consumers, whether you are meat-eating, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, or have other dietary preferences. Breadroot is really invested in the local community; they try to obtain as much of the food from local sources as they can, including eggs, flax seed, beets, breads, and more. What they can't get locally they have shipped in. The reason I didn't give Breadroot that 5th star is because sometimes they don't have the best or most consistent selection of produce; for instance, they run out of apples or oranges before the next shipment. However, this, to me, is worth the minor hassle, because Breadroot is a true community-minded cooperative that just can't have everything under the sun in stock all the time. They're not big enough and rolling in enough money (like the bigger grocery stores) that they can afford to take chances with extra produce going bad if it doesn't sell. Another Breadroot plus, though, is that members can order cases of food at the same cost as the store does, plus a small service fee. Not a bad deal! So come on in to Breadroot for good food, fair prices, and friendly conversation with whichever volunteer is working that day! :)
