Downtown State College Farmers Market

By: Luisa E. (Aug 6, 2009)
This market has a great variety of locally grown and freshly made products. For example, there is an Amish dairy farmer who not only offers fresh milk, but handmade yogurt, butter, cheese... and his wife makes the most divine ice cream. No flavor added, just pure creamy goodness. So fresh you can taste the grass the cow ate that morning. Then you go to the next table and get a box of ripe, juicy strawberries, which you can smell long before you see them. Take a break and walk one block to the Penn State campus, sit in grass in the shade of a giant, old tree, and devour the strawberries and ice cream. Rested and refreshed, you now head back into the market bustle and find the outstanding heirloom tomatoes, available in all stripes (literally, the zebra variety is striped), to have for dinner with some freshly picked spinach and freshly baked bread (all from the farmers market)... if you can stand to alter their perfection with anything but a sprinkle of salt. Before heading home, pick up a fruit pie, some yogurt and those killer peaches for dessert (and breakfast). There's nothing like it. Man, I can't wait till Friday!
