Poplar Head Farmers Market

I have a special place in my heart for Poplar Head Farmers Market - not only am I a vegetarian but I'm former Whole Foods employee which means I'm all about local, local, local and being green (buying local helps reduce carbon footprints)! The market is centrally located in downtown Dothan, Alabama and conveniently open on Saturdays from 8am - 12pm. My husband and I moved from Birmingham, AL to Dothan almost two years ago and the one thing I knew I would miss about living in a big city was the abundance of farmers markets and fresh produce. Thankfully, I discovered Poplar Head Farmers Market last summer and have been extremely pleased with all the variety of fruits, veggies, homemade breads and jams, arts & crafts, early morning entertainment, and the vendors are all super helpful and knowledgeable. Even though summertime in lower Alabama is super hot, the farmers market is a great way to get outside and embrace the weather - each vendor is set up under white tents to keep the fruits, veggies, and yourself shaded and cool. The market is not only a place to buy local produce but also the Wiregrass Museum of Arts provides the kids with a hands-on art project while you do the sampling (one of my favorite things to do) and shopping. All-in-all, I don't miss the big city farmers market thanks to Julie Bishop (market manager) for making Poplar Head Farmers Market such a fun-filled, produce-packed, good ole summertime treat!
