They were ripe enough that they were a bit runny and juicy on the inside, but none were "dry", or spoiled. Several in the shipment arrived with something that looked like mold on their wrinkly hides, but I washed with dilute soap and a soft brush before I cut into them.
I'd never ordered passion fruit before so I had no idea that a little mold was not the end of the world. As a matter of fact , when I complained that I had to trash several of the first shipment...This farmer was very patient to explain that they can look a bit rough on the outside but because of the thickness of the outer layers the insides were seldom effected. The next shipment contained several extra fruits ...(more than I threw out from the first shipment ). The amount of juice was ...abundant and aromatic. They made DELICIOUS low sugar jam.
My guess is that, this year no fruit will be consistent all season. Between extreme drought, then extreme rains...I expect you could get from one extreme to the other if ordering several weeks apart from the same farms.
I hope you have better luck next time, call, or email ahead and tell them you want fruit with firm flesh to eat out of hand. I'm sure they will accomodate if they can. Sincerely, BE Kitchens
