Our first year, 2010, was a tough one for the farm. The weather was exceedingly hot and dry and several crops were either lost or sparse. It was a great lesson about CSAs showing that you truly do share in the farmer's feast or famine. Still, our weekly share was adequate, sometimes even more than adequate, and we found the vegetables to be much more flavorful and FRESH. 2011 was a BOUNTY year - fabulous!
Another lesson learned was an introduction to a wonderful variety of vegetables. Kohlrabi? Not bad. Baby bok choy? Delicious (and nothing like the aged, limp baby bok choy at the grocery). Salad turnips? Never heard of them but I am now a turnip eater. And the variety of radishes last year (2011) was amazing.
Farm Manager David Robb and his team do a great job planting a variety of produce, getting it to us fast and fresh (they have a large walk-in refrigerator where they place the shares) and sending share-holders a weekly email with a preview of items in the weekly share along with occasional recipes and, sometimes, an almost poetic view into life at the farm, good and bad. They often have baskets where we can switch items we don't want for something we do. They also have an honor market of additional veggies, honey and local eggs.
Needless to say, my friend and I have already purchased our Spring and Summer 2012 shares. I highly recommend this wonderful CSA.
