Alton Farmers' & Artisans' Market

By: bill dautrieve (Aug 2, 2014)
I don't understand how 10 or 20 Alton Farmers' & Artisans' Market vendors can all have the same prices on fresh veggies and fruit. I didn't see as much as a nickel's difference. I've never seen that at Soulard, Wood River, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Jerseyville, Tower Grove, or Overland farmers' markets.

The new location is nice, with lots of parking and more vendors.

Same price for different quality product is socialism. If you prefer socialism, [i.e., you're a democrat], then don't complain. If you prefer capitalism, then either take your business elsewhere or buy the better quality product.

price fixing and collusion are illegal trade practices but offering competitive prices makes you a jerk somehow? Not to any consumer I know .....

They have their prices in line with each other so NO ONE gets bent out of shape and they can all be fair to each other. There is a deeply HUGE inequality at all of the other Farm Markets in the area. And it is DEEPLY unfair to other vendors when they are undercut so they can not make profit. EVERY GROWER WORKS HARD!, and deserves to profit from their labor. But when you have a bunch of jerks who try to undercut their peers EVERYONE gets unhappy. That is no way to have a fair market. This way everyone can have peace and harmony. THAT IS WHAT MAKES A MARKET GOOD and run well. My hat is off to them. Vendors .Good for you! and Thanks for all your hard work.
