The Orange Shop

By: victoria pecoraro (Feb 25, 2016)
both the indian river grapefruit and the honeybells i ordered from the orange shop are disappointing. they are very expensive, but more than a few are not up to quality standards that they boast about - honeybells mostly soft with grey tops and clearly old while some are green and definitely not ripe. a few of the grapefruit are soft and a couple are extremely hard like softballs hard - with 3 grapefruits that are definitely white and not indian river pink. i must say that the grapefruit i have eaten are delicious though. i think next time, i will go directly to the smaller growers and bypass the distributor. (i was swayed by the free shipping) - i also ordered navel oranges and satsuma tangerines through local harvest - direct from the farms and their products are excellent.....avocadoes have just shipped from the farm in florida - excited to see how they are. i'm going to order lemons next - meyers and eureka. hope they are as wonderful as described.

Pete Spyke says: (Mar 28, 2016) Victoria, We always appreciate feedback and reviews of our products. I have a couple of comments, but first let me say that we have a 100% arrival guarantee, and it sounds like the delicate Honeybells had some issues in transit. Our last picking of the year will be tomorrow, and I've scheduled another tray to be shipped out to you. General comments -- in Florida citrus, peel color is not an indication of ripeness. If the winter is warm, quite often the fruit from certain positions on the tree retain a green color. Citrus does not "ripen" like peaches or bananas -- the amount of sugar, which imparts sweetness, is a function of time since bloom, not peel color. We don't manipulate the peel color as do commercial shippers, so some of the fruit may have green in the peel, and some won't, even from the same tree. As far as grapefruit, there are a number of varieties of "red" grapefruit, and some have more blush on the peel or color in the flesh than others. None of the grapefruit we ship are white varieties. Last comment -- if for any reason someone needs to talk about their fruit, it works much better to contact us directly. We do monitor these reviews, but a direct message will receive a faster, and more personalized, response. Thanks again. Pete Spyke
