No pastured eggs here
By: Jessica Moskowitz    (Aug 28, 2013)

Unfortunately I have been on the hunt for eggs from pastured hens (ones allowed to graze in a pasture as opposed to free-range and cage-free varieties kept indoors with "access" to the outdoors) and they don't have them here as listed in the market description. The vendor Feather Ridge Farms actually lied to me and said their hens were pastured and repeatedly pointed to a photo of a large field convincing me to buy eggs and meat from them. If you've had pastured meats and eggs, you'll immediately be able to taste the difference. Perhaps the woman manning the booth that day just didn't know what she was talking about and didn't intentionally lie, but I'm bothered that they are passing themselves off as pastured when their website and materials say nothing of the sort. I think they're just catering to the people who have recently jumped on the farm-to-table bandwagon and don't know the difference. Totally bummed by the lip service and not trusting of any other vendors here now unless I actually visit the farm. Sigh. Word to the wise, be sure to research the farming and husbandry practices of the vendors at these markets before making purchases if you are seeking truly meat and eggs from free roaming animals.

It is not a huge market, but there is often a wonderful variety packed into that little area. And nothing I've had from there there has been short of spectacular!

My family lived in Latin America, where buying, preparing and eating food was always a social event. The Ossining Farmers Market has the same "feel" of a friendly, open and joyful time shared by all. We often meet friends, chat with the farmers and other shoppers, and end up satisfied that we'll be eating well throughout the week.

The market is almost a full-stop shopping, with everything you need for a wholesome, healthy meal week after week. Everything is so fresh and yummy, and the farmers are really great people -- I'm happy to support them all.
