Down to Earth Ossining Farmers Market

By: Jessica Moskowitz (Aug 28, 2013)
Unfortunately I have been on the hunt for eggs from pastured hens (ones allowed to graze in a pasture as opposed to free-range and cage-free varieties kept indoors with "access" to the outdoors) and they don't have them here as listed in the market description. The vendor Feather Ridge Farms actually lied to me and said their hens were pastured and repeatedly pointed to a photo of a large field convincing me to buy eggs and meat from them. If you've had pastured meats and eggs, you'll immediately be able to taste the difference. Perhaps the woman manning the booth that day just didn't know what she was talking about and didn't intentionally lie, but I'm bothered that they are passing themselves off as pastured when their website and materials say nothing of the sort. I think they're just catering to the people who have recently jumped on the farm-to-table bandwagon and don't know the difference. Totally bummed by the lip service and not trusting of any other vendors here now unless I actually visit the farm. Sigh. Word to the wise, be sure to research the farming and husbandry practices of the vendors at these markets before making purchases if you are seeking truly meat and eggs from free roaming animals.
