Soulard is more of an experience than a true farmers' market. Tons of people, lots to see, great atmosphere. But if you keep your eyes open, you'll see vendors cutting open the same bags of produce that you can buy in any grocery store and dumping it out into the "fresh" bins. And if you think about it, where are these vendors getting vegetables and fruits way before they're in season in this part of the country? Some even have stickers on them - exactly the same as in the stores. Sure there are locally-grown things too. But you're never quite sure what you're getting at any given moment.

You know, I agree. I visited Soulard in the Spring this year (2011) and was excited to see what they would have there. What I found was that it is a fun atmosphere, but not many local farmers from what I can tell. I've thought about coming to the St. Louis to sell produce, but not sure there is a farmer's market there where the focus is local. Is there a Farmer's Market set up by farmers in St. Louis?

Their spice shop is awesome. I love the variety of food that you can't typically find in a regular supermarket. I like the eclectic crowd, great art, everything!

I love the size of it and the variety of booths. This place has everything...hand-made soaps and skin-care products, preserves, candles and essential oils, home-made breads, handbags, and, of course, a variety of fruit and vegetable stands.

Always a variety plus extras in the way of 'tasting' - a very colorful atmosphere - supports the surrounding community farmers.

The market has a lot of history. The building is beautiful and there is nothing more wonderful than strolling through the crowds on a Saturday morning. There is a meat shop, seafood shop, spice market, just everything you could possibly imagine and then some!

It has been around for as long as I can remember. Since wayyyyy before I was born (it is a very old and historic market). It has American grown produce by our wonderful local farmers, and the produce is delicious. I hope they can win the $5,000.00. I strongly support AMERICAN GROWN PRODUCE.
