Soulard is more of an experience than a true farmers' market. Tons of people, lots to see, great atmosphere. But if you keep your eyes open, you'll see vendors cutting open the same bags of produce that you can buy in any grocery store and dumping it out into the "fresh" bins. And if you think about it, where are these vendors getting vegetables and fruits way before they're in season in this part of the country? Some even have stickers on them - exactly the same as in the stores. Sure there are locally-grown things too. But you're never quite sure what you're getting at any given moment.

You know, I agree. I visited Soulard in the Spring this year (2011) and was excited to see what they would have there. What I found was that it is a fun atmosphere, but not many local farmers from what I can tell. I've thought about coming to the St. Louis to sell produce, but not sure there is a farmer's market there where the focus is local. Is there a Farmer's Market set up by farmers in St. Louis?
