I live within a few hundred feet of this Farmer's Market and I enjoy going to it on Friday afternoons in the summer for fresh produce and local fare. I do hope this spring/summer they have more vegetables and fruit stands. There is a large variety of things such as local artists, nuts, breads, veggies, fruits, popcorn, etc. Everyone at the stands are nice, courteous and fair. I go every Friday that it's open! My only "complaint" is that I wish they were open longer, and had more booths.

When you go to the Bartlet Farmers Market buyer beware. Windy Acres from Geneva, IL. participates in the Bartlett, IL Farmers Market. On 8/29/08, I bought a watermelon (~$7.00). When I cut it in half, there was a huge crack (+) running though the middle of the watermelon. Because of this the melon was dry. I immediately returned it to the Farmers Market. Windy Acres refused to give me a refund. I did not want to take a chance on another watermelon. The representative for Windy Acres arrogantly insisted that the watermelon was perfect. Then she told me I could pick out other produce, which I did not need. I am sure they have a good product; it's not that hard to grow produce. But if you are running a business, customer service is key, and that is lacking. Remember the customer is always right. Unfortunately once they got a hold of my cash, it was gone, because that's their priority, not the customer. For me, this experience has also tainted other businesses that participate in the market, which may have excellent customer service policies.

I will shop at Jewel which carries local produce, or Caputos in Hanover Park which has a large and fresh selection of produce. If you are not satisfied they will refund your money. Also, If you're in the Bartlett area try Toms Market on Lake Street. They are customer friendly and stand behind what they sell. Bartlett officials were sympathetic, but could do nothing. They provide the space and that's it.

The review seemed more whiney than anything else. The comment that it isn't that hard to grow produce shows the buyer's ignorance. Has that person tried growing produce? And, after all, if the split in the watermelon was inside the watermelon, how was anyone supposed to know about it. Maybe the person didn't check to feel the weight of the watermelon in comparison to it's size. That is usually a good indicator of water weight. Although the person's money probably should have been refunded, I do have this question. Did the buyer get a receipt for the product? And when did they go back to the market to return the watermelon? And to top it all off, the "bad" experience tainted the whole market? Now the disgruntled buyer recommends stores, most of whom do a lot of importing of produce, which isn't "green" at all, but very costly due to fuel prices, not to mention the chemicals used on the produce to insure it's longevity. The goal of farmers' markets is to promote local growers and their product. Obviously this person who recommends going to grocery stores has missed the entire point of the market idea. Did that person go there for the "green experience" or the "feel good" factor? Even buying produce at a regular store is no guarantee of it's perfection. But I suppose that the only thing the person was interested in was getting their money back. That is still no reason to put down the entire market.
