The Sitka Farmers Market will celebrate its 11th season in 2018. Our market takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on seven Saturdays this summer -- July 7, July 21, Aug. 4, Aug. 11, Aug. 25, Sept. 1, and Sept. 15 -- at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall, 235 Katlian Street, in downtown Sitka.

The market features fresh local produce, home-baked goods, locally caught fish (on occasion), arts and crafts, and more. We also take WIC and SNAP benefits at the market, and (thanks to a grant from the Sitka White Elephant Shop, aka the White E) we also match up to $20 in produce purchases made using WIC and SNAP benefits.

Please note, the contacts for 2018 are market manager Nina Vizcarrondo (907) 738-9301 and assistant manager Charles Bingham (907) 623-7660. You can email them at sitkafarmersmarket (at) gmail.com. The Sitka Local Foods Network hosts the market (look for our website), and there are Facebook pages for both the Sitka Local Foods Network and Sitka Farmers Market.

We can buy fish from the folks that caught it...and for a good price. Folks around town are beginning to plant some food in with their flowers and vegeies are even encroching on lawns. If the barges stop running, or when the price of fuel goes back up, we might be a little better prepared. But the reason I love the market is the FUN...music, great locally prepared food...its is a broo-ha-ha!

It's a great new market that has brought our community together and served as an inspiration. Living on an Island in an Alaskan rain forest that doesn't have traditional farms provided a great canvas for showing that Farmers Market can happen in communities of all shapes sizes and locations. I would say that the fresh fish in our market is second to none and the produce is getting better and better. Last but not least this is a great cross cultural event with Native and non native people celebrating local foods together.

I support Sitka Farmers Market because it enables fresh fish to be available at a reasonable price to families, especially those that aren't healthy enough to go out and catch it.

Only in it's second year, the Sitka Fish and Farmer's Market has brought the community together around natural food and harvesting in a fun, educational, tasty and exciting way. Sitkans seem, now more than ever, committed to local production of fruits and vegetables (as much as possible, anyway, in an Alaska rain forest.)

It supports our local seafood industry and local growers. Besides, we need this kind of social outlet here in Sitka!

Amazing variety for such a small land mass for production. And it's the freshest food in Alaska.

Sitka, Alaska, is a community of 8,500 people located on remote Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, an island where there are more bears than people and about 95 percent of our food is shipped or flown into town. We have no real commercial agriculture on our island, and only a handful of large family gardens. At the 2008 Sitka Health Summit, two projects related to food security were launched, and they led to the creation of the Sitka Local Foods Network, http://www.sitkalocalfoodsnetwork.org/. One of those projects was the Sitka Farmers Market, which has been a great success with about 25-30 vendors each market selling fresh local produce, locally caught fish (salmon, cod, halibut, oysters, etc.), home bakers and arts and crafts. It has been a great event to bring the community together, with several hundred people showing up each market.

Love the taste of fresh produce and the unusual varieties. The Sitka Farmers Market is also a great place to see friends and make new ones.

It enables me to get fresh produce (which is a treat in Alaska), it provides a venue for venders, and it is a gathering place.

The Farmers Market has provided a magnet for our community pulling people from across the community together in the search of local food. It brings out the best in our community and supports our local fishermen and women plus local gardeners, home bakers and artisans.

It's great to get local people together to share produce, fish, hand-made crafts, etc - what a great way to support the community! I volunteer with the Sitka Local Food Network (the group that organizes the Farmers Markets) and I also really enjoy working at our Fellowship Farm garden! Such good, healthy work, and the produce is delicious!
